Solids, Liquids, and Gases | Science Museum of Minnesota

Solids, Liquids, and Gases

About this Experience

Imagine a test tube as large as your students, and watch as the solid and liquid inside react and become a gas... What happens when a balloon is fitted over the top? Introduce your students to the science of chemistry through the use of some unusual demonstrations. Invite students to explore the properties of solids, liquids and gases and how energy changes matter from one state to another.

Program Options: Solids, Liquids, and Gases is available only as a large group assembly.

ASSEMBLY MAX: 250 students

Learning Goals
  • To demonstrate the three phases of matter.
  • To introduce energy as a concept different from matter.
  • To introduce the scientific method by having students predict results of experiments, perform experiments and notice outcomes.
  • To offer a working model of atomic behavior as it relates to phase change.
  • To demonstrate phase change.
