huipil

Maya women's huipil from Tikal, Guatemala. Rectangular shape - square neck hole - six pieces sewn together. Handwoven fabric - symmetrical sections of multi color vertical stripes separated by standard sized red stripes with a white stripe center. Two rectangular horizontal sections of supplementary weft patterning appear on the front and back. Each section consists of several rows, each of a different color, each four threads wide. The neckhole hem is finished with a tubular edging in multi color sections each about two inches wide. The bottom hem is unfinished.
