During School Release days for Education Minnesota (October 16-20), we've got a full lineup of activities for kids and families!

Extended Hours

Maya: Hidden Worlds RevealedEnjoy the Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed exhibition and Mystery of the Maya Omnitheater film with extra hours for the weekend! We'll be open from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Friday night, students with ID get special discounted admission after 5 p.m.

Remember, Science Museum members get free admission to both the Omnitheater and exhibit halls. We strongly recommend purchasing advance tickets to minimize your wait and guarantee your visit times.

Education Minnesota Break Classes

Designed to fit your schedule, some of our most popular classes are available for one day (Wednesday, October 17) or in two-day version (Thursday-Friday, October 17 and 18). Make the most of your break!

Thursday and Friday, October 17-18 (Two-Day Classes)

classCreative Circuits
9 a.m.-4 p.m., ages 9-12

Explore circuitry and electricity as you use a simple circuit and LED to create a light up postcard based on work at MIT Media Lab. Switch gears as you build a self-propelled, wire controlled vehicle using batteries, motors, and wiring. Take your creations home at the end of the class to share with family and friends. Bring a bag lunch. Register Online

Get Set to be a Vet
9 a.m.-12 p.m., ages 6-8

Explore the careers of veterinarians and discover how to take better care of your pets. Examine real animal X-rays and perform a mock surgery. Register Online

Freaky Plastic Phenomena
9 a.m. - 12 p.m., ages 6-8

Play with different kinds of plastic substances such as instant snow, hot ice, and friendly plastic. Find out how chemists invent new polymer toys and create different kinds of slime and superballs. Register Online

Detective Science
9 a.m. - 12 p.m., ages 6-8

Be a detective and learn how to fingerprint, perform fiber analysis and chromatography. Hone your powers of observation and deduction. Register Online

LEGO Vehicles for Girls
9 a.m. - 12 p.m., ages 6-8

Using LEGO Technic pieces, build amusement park rides and attractions such as a tilt-a-whirl or a merry-go-round. Register Online

Technology Tasters
9 a.m. - 12 p.m., ages 6-8

Experiment with all kinds of things you can do with technology! Create art and stories on the computer and explore animation. Register Online

Design a Computer Game: Create Your Own Adventure Game
9 a.m. - 12 p.m., ages 9-12

Build your own interactive game or story using programming software from the MIT Media Lab called Scratch. Learn how to draw characters and program game action. Register Online

Chain Reaction Contraption
9 a.m. - 12 p.m., ages 9-12

Create a ridiculously long series of mechanical and electrical actions that end in a grand finale! Learn about basic circuitry, then incorporate electric motors in your chain reaction to knock down, push, or make objects move through the air. Register Online

Carpentry for Kids: Wooden Toys
9 a.m. - 12 p.m., ages 9-12

Head to the carpentry workshop to build a "Shoot the Moon" game. Measure and cut wood using hand saws. Put your game together with hammer and nails and take it home to share with family and friends. Register Online

Introduction to Carpentry
1-4 p.m., ages 6-8

Head to the workshop and safely start to use carpentry tools such as saws, hammer, and nails. Measure wood and build a wooden toy to take home. Register Online

Up: The Science of Flight
1-4 p.m., ages 6-8

Travel through time as we explore the history of flight. Examine flying plant material and insects, make kites, and design, build, and test a variety of paper airplanes and rockets. Register Online

Ocean Animals
1-4 p.m., ages 6-8

Dive into the deep blue sea to discover whales, sharks, and the amazing diversity of animal life. Head to the lab and strap on your goggles as you dissect a squid. Register Online

1-4 p.m., ages 9-12

Enter the exciting world of chemistry! Investigate chemicals and colors, gases and liquids, weights and densities. Register Online

SciGirls Club
1-4 p.m., ages 9-12

If you're a fan of the great PBS series "SciGirls", come join us for hands-on science activities, clips from your favorite shows and stories of women scientists from history and today. Register Online

Green Screen Your Dream
1-4 p.m., ages 9-12

Master the art of video special effects. Learn how to use green screen technology to put yourself into a movie, traveling around the world without leaving the lab. Post your movies online to view at home. Register Online

LEGO Machines and Structures
1-4 p.m., ages 6-8

Learn new LEGO building techniques to make machines that move and structures that can bear weight. Register Online

Minifigure Movie Stars
1-4 p.m., ages 6-8
