Girl Scout Programs through Council

The Lee & Rose Warner Nature Center currently offers many exciting Girl Scout programs in a partnership with the Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys. Troops can register directly with the council by clicking on the links below. As staffing and space allows we also offer many more programs on your choice of dates. Brownie Classes

Senses Try-It
November 1, 2008, 9:00 - 12:00 a.m. - Register Through Council
November 1, 2008, 1 - 4 p.m. - Register Through Council

Explore the woods and prairie using all your senses. Memorize a tree blindfolded and see if you can find it again through touch. Make a super-ear to hear sounds in the woods. This class is sense-sational!! Senses Try-It included.

Earth and Sky Try-It

Head outside to explore temperature and learn what the Earth and Sky has to offer. Come inside to learn about the Earth, Sun, and why eclipses occur. Make cloud art and watch birds through binoculars at the feeder stations. Earth and Sky Try-It included in the fee.

Watching Wildlife

Meet a live red-tailed hawk. Discover how animals survive the winter by competing in the Squirrel Olympics, investigate the hidden lives of animals, and learn what they eat. Check out the hardy winter birds at the feeding station and meet a live fox snake! Watching Wildlife Try-It included in fee.

Full Moon Hike/Showshoe
January 9, 2009, 6:00 p.m - 7:30 p.m. - Register through Council

Discover the mystery of the woods by the light of the full moon. Listen for owls and coyotes as you hike the trails and learn how nocturnal animals thrive in the dark. Enjoy hot cocoa and a warm fire afterwards. Hike on snowshoes if conditions allow.

See a live Barred Owl when you enter the majestic world of Warner Nature Center in the wintertime. Head out to the trails for a winter hike to learn about owls' habitats. The hike will be on snowshoes conditions permitting.

Snowshoe Romp & Winter Hike

Everybody romp! Put on a pair of wood framed snowshoes and explore the woods, meadows and marshes of Warner Nature Center. Look for tracks of deer, mice, and coyote. Race your friends in a snowshoe race! Have fun learning about and looking for winter animal signs hike without the snowshoes if snow is insufficient.

Chickadee and Wren Birdhouse Workshop
March 7, 2009, 2:00 p.m - 4:00 p.m. - Register through Council

Join naturalists at Warner Nature Center to learn about nesting birds. Build a cedar birdhouse for either a chickadee or wren and take your project home to improve nesting habitats in your yard. Discover opportunities to help scientists learn more about birds by monitoring your nest box.

Join us for an evening of stars, telescopes and stories. Learn about constellations, how to use a moon journal, and why the moon has phases. If weather permits, head outside to look through a large telescope. If it is cloudy we will enjoy the stars in our inflatable planetarium. Space Explorer Try-It included in fee.

Learn about the only sugar native to North America. Hike through the hardwood forests, learn the history of maple syruping, see how trees are tapped, learn how sap is refined into syrup, and taste the difference between real syrup and commercial artificial syrups. See the ancient art of rock boiling where glowing hot rocks from a fire are used to boil sap. Dress to be outdoors.

What are seeds and where do plants come from? Explore plants, seeds, and soil as you make art from leaves, go on a spring detective hike, receive your Plants Try-It, and even plant some seeds to take home! Dress to be outdoors.

Outdoor Adventurer Try-It

Build an emergency shelter out of natural materials, learn how to make a nutritious snack and go on a hike to explore the outdoors using all of your senses. Every girl receives the Outdoor Adventurer Try-It at the end of this program. Snack provided. Everyone must dress to be outdoors.

Bird Banding
May 30, 2009, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. - Register through Council

Experience our tradition of bird banding at Warner Nature Center. Researchers catch birds in nearly invisible "mist" nets. Birds are then identified, tagged, and released as part of an international bird tracking program. See beautiful migrating songbirds up close. You may even get to help release one of the birds!

Radio Telemetry Trackers
May 30, 2009, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. - Register through Council

Become a wildlife biologist for a day and learn how they use radio telemetry to track animals. Track down the rare and threatened Blanding's turtles fitted with transmitters. Help the Warner Nature Center learn more about their habits and habitats

Water Everywhere Try-It

Explore the lakes of the Warner Nature Center by dip netting for aquatic critters. Inside, join in on some wacky science experiments to investigate the mysterious properties of water and receive your Water Everywhere Try-It. Please bring a snack and dress to be outdoors.

Fossil Hunt at Lilydale Regional Park
June 9, 2009, 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. - Register through Council

Join a naturalist from Warner Nature Center on a fossil hunt near the river banks of the Mississippi. Meet at Lilydale Regional Park in St. Paul to explore sites rich in fossils from over 400 million years ago! Take home a few fossils that you find.

Sky Search Badge
December 13, 2008, 5:30 p.m - 7:30 p.m. - Register through Council

Join us on the Winter Solstice! Make a planisphere sky chart. Find the north star and discover why the moon has phases. Take part in a fun ancient storytelling about constellations. Weather permitting, head outside to look through a large telescope! If it is cloudy we will enjoy the stars in our inflatable planetarium. Sky Search badge included.

Learn the basics of compass work and test yourself on our outdoor compass course. Learn how to shoot and find a bearing. Make a full day of adventure and sign up for Orienteering level 2 as well! If signing up for both level 1 and 2, bring a bag lunch and eat on site. This class fulfills some requirements for the Finding Your Way badge.

Orienteering Level 2- Woodland Compass
June 6, 2009, 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. - Register through Council

Add pacing to your orienteering skills before heading off to the woodland orienteering course at Warner Nature Center. The level 2 course is a challenging and fun way to test your compass skills on a real world orienteering course. Use compass to navigate though the woods and gather clues along the way to solve a mystery at the end. If signing up for both level 1 and 2, bring a bag lunch and eat on site. This class fulfills some requirements for the Finding Your Way badge. Orienteering Level 1 is a prerequisite for this course. Dress to be outdoors.
