A large photograph of college students tells the story of Shifting Categories. Each student wears a t-shirt imprinted with three Census years and the racial categories they would have been assigned in that year. Nearby stories focus on each student, his or her ancestors, and the history behind the frequent changes to Census categories in the U.S. Together, these stories illustrate how race has been a fluid concept with enormous political and personal ramifications.
