Have students create a rough draft of the 4 corners assignment by taking a blank white paper and writing their name in the center. In the top right corner have them write a hobby they enjoy, in the top left corner have them write something they like about school, in the bottom right corner have them write a hope and dream for the school year and in teh bottom left have them write their favorite food. They should come to day 1 with this document completed.
Day 1
-
Begin class discussion about cell phones, computers, video games and where computer programming is in the real world
-
Brainstorm and record different places where kids see computer programming in the real world. Keep this list up for additions throughout the project
-
Show a basic sprite in Scratch and introduce the computer program
-
Show how you can animate the Scratch Sprite
-
Make him glide, say something, change costume, move, etc.
-
Introduce vocabulary for Scratch
-
-
Ask the students how they think we could use Scratch with their 4 corners rough draft project?
-
Who would we share these projects with?
-
What kind of a timeline do we need in order to share this with our audience?
Day 2
-
Mini Scratch Lesson showing students how to animate their name
-
Walk each student through creating a sprite of their name, changing the costume, giving it some animation and saving the project.
-
Write their name with the drawing tools
-
Animate your Name to make it change color
Students will also have to make 2 costumes so that the name changes in some way.
Day 3
-
Tell students they are going to start adding to their 4 corners project by creating 4 new sprites for each corner of their project.
-
Hand out the Scratch Cards so that students can have other ideas for animation on their sprites
-
At the end of the work time, have students walk around and share the things they have created
-
This would be a great day to have the SMM staff as a resource to help students imagine and play!
-
At the end of the session ask the class to reflect a bit on what they learned, what they saw, how they are going to change things tomorrow, etc
Day 4-5-?
-
Work time for students to imagine, create, play, share, reflect, imagine!
At the end of the Project
-
Have students present their Scratch Projects to the class in a formal presentation
-
Ask students to reflect on this project
-
Brainstorm other ideas you could use Scratch for
-
Make a plan as to how you are going to share your Scratch projects
-
Who else would like to learn about Scratch? How can we help?
