What have I been doing with Scratch?
Grades:
K- Introduce Scratch to them on Monday for the first time. I showed them how to open Scratch to start a new project. I introduced the Paint Editor Tools. On the "Stage", I had them draw a picture of themselves doing something they love. Pleasantly I was surprised how well they worked. They were all on tasked and engaged. There was one student in particular that really got into his drawing. He had all the details in his picture (himself playing outside on the green grass) where most of his peers "scribbled" designs and patterns (but when asked to talk about their picture, they all had a story about what they were doing in their picture).
1- They were working on writing sentences. We had the students write a complete sentence about themselves and draw a picture to go with the sentence. One of the first grade teacher had his students make the sprite "talk". Future project: Students will retell a story using Scratch.
2- We completed our project on animal tracks.
3- I just introduced Scratch to one of the third grade class this week. They explored with the paint editor tools. Future Project: They are studying a unit on St. Paul. We will be designing a project around St. Paul.
4- For our Math, Science and Technology Showcase Night at Galtier, one of the 4th grade class' science project is to animate and demonstrate what a circuit is. See their completed projects at: http://scratch.mit.edu/users/room2245
What surprised me about these 4th graders was when they upload their projects onto the web, they really got into commenting on each others' project. At showcase night, students who came viewed their project with their family directly from the Scratch website. Current Project: Both 4th grade classes are studying MN. Students will animate 4 facts they gathered about MN.
5- I just introduced Scratch to both classes this week. Many of these students have had some experience with Scratch from the previous year. Introduced the Scratch interface (buttons, etc..) and then students were given the opportunity to explore with Scratch. Future Project: They are studying Biography in Reader's Workshop. We're going to design a project around that.
6- Students have completed a biography research paper on a famous African American person. Students will create a Scratch project to introduce 4 facts about their person. They will incorporate some basic animations.
