MISSION
STATEMENT: To
make available in-depth learning opportunities for young people who
could benefit most from access to digital technologies as tools for
creativity, observation, and expression.
Studio 3D (Digital Design
& Development) is both an open workshop environment and project-based
programming where young people ages 10 - 17 can come after school to
work with adult mentors in learning how to use high-end computer applications
as tools for interdisciplinary explorations of science, art, and technology.
The target audience for the program is low-income youth living in inner-city
Minneapolis neighborhoods withing walking distance or easy MTC bus access
from the sites.
Focus on urban youth and mentors:
Urban youth are audiences of strategic importance to each of the project
partners involved. SMM's Youth Science Center has been cited as a model
program nationally for integrating youth programs within the Science
Museum overall structure. Volunteer mentors have been recruited from
the community and includes adults from local corporations, artists,
scientists, technologists and other interested adults who have a passion
for learning and a desire to work with young people. By involving volunteer
mentors, the program provides youth with the opportunity to see role
models working on projects and learning. In today's rapidly-changing
society, perhaps the most important skill of all is the ability to learn
new things.
EVALUATION: An evaluation
based on interviews of Studio 3D participants, staff, and mentors, as
well as on projects, observations, journals, and other documentation,
was conducted and is currently being written. Here is the the most recent
draft: Studio 3D Evaluation
Report.
