The pulmonary artery is unlike any other artery. Arteries usually carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to different parts of the body, but not the pulmonary artery. It plays a similar role to the role of a vein, because it carries deoxygenated blood away from the heart (right ventricle) to the lungs.
