(1749 - 1832) was a German scientist, poet and philosopher, and wrote
the poem that inspired the Sorcerer's Apprentice. Goethe had a profound
influence on the history of German art music: since the late eighteenth
century, over 700 of his poems have been set by nearly 600 composers
as Lieder for voice and piano.
Paul
Dukas (1865 - 1935) was a friend of Debussy who found an early musical
career as a critic and as an orchestrator. His self criticism led him
to destroy many of his compositions and only allow a small number of
works to be published. He remained influential and respected as a teacher
throughout his life.
