Jill Coleman Wasik began her career at SCWRS in the Laboratory Technician II position, and moved into the Laboratory Manager position when her predecessor decided to pursue personal goals. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology, with a chemistry minor, from the University of Minnesota, Morris. She is currently pursuing her Masters degree in Water Resources Science at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. She is researching mercury and sulfur cycling in boreal wetlands for her thesis project. Jill is originally from Carver County, on the southwest side of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. She feels fortunate to have a career in her field of interest, and is excited to have the opportunity to pursue her passion for environmental issues so close to home.

As Laboratory Manager, Jill is a part of the research staff at SCWRS, and is also responsible for activities in the various laboratories located at SCWRS. The main laboratory has a variety of instruments that perform wet chemical analyses of water and sediment samples. Other laboratories include a 210Pb sediment dating laboratory for radioisotopic dating of sediment cores from around the world, a microscope lab with research-grade compound and dissecting microscopes, and a gamma spectrometry laboratory for fingerprinting sources of riverine suspended sediment. Jill assists graduate students and visiting researchers in the use of instrumentation while using SCWRS laboratories for their research. She is also responsible performing analyses, setting up new protocols, and helping the other staff scientists with current research projects. For more information about sample analysis fees and laboratory resources for visiting researchers, email or call, Jill Coleman Wasik.
