MUSE Elementary School Institute
Scholarship Opportunity

August 24-28, 2009 at the Science Museum of Minnesota

Presented by the Science Museum of Minnesota's Professional Development Team

MUSE institutes are designed to help educators develop more effective tools for STEM teaching and learning, including improved understanding of STEM subject matter integration, inquiry, the nature of science, algebra readiness, culturally relevant curriculum, and student identity. The institutes will support teachers in translating these new understandings into practical classroom applications.

Each MUSE institute encompasses 30 hours of professional development, and includes lunch, parking, additional materials, and a one-year membership to Science House: A Resource Center for Educators at no charge. Institutes are designed for between 18 and 25 people. Costs for the institutes are generously supported by the State of Minnesota. Schools must contribute $3,000 (15% of the $20,000 cost of the institute). Participants will have a choice of two graduate credits from Winona State University or a stipend. Funds are available for lodging for participants from Greater Minnesota.

School Eligibility: Eligible schools are accredited public elementary schools in Minnesota that have not participated in a summer institute with the Science Museum of Minnesota's Professional Development Department. Individual participants are building staff responsible for teaching science, technology, engineering, and/or math. The principal must attend the entire institute. Please note that substitutes are not eligible for this institute.

Selection Criteria: Priority will be given to eligible elementary schools that evidence a strong commitment to STEM education and that have limited access to resources. Schools located in rural Minnesota will be given special consideration. Selection will be based on thoughtful responses to the application questions as well.

School Institute Scholarship application deadline: Friday, February 20.
Notification: Friday, February 27.
