2009 Science and Mathematics Elementary and Middle Level
Principal of the Year Award

This award honors the key role elementary and middle level principals play in creating a culture that encourages and celebrates math and science literacy. It is offered in alternate years to specialty and general education school principals. In odd years, such as this year, the award is offered to general education schools. In even years, the award is offered to specialty schools (sciencemagnets and environmental education schools).

The competition is co-sponsored by the Minnesota Elementary School Principals' Association (MESPA) and the Science Museum and the winner will be recognized at the annual Banquet and Awards Program on February 5 at MESPA Institute 2009, receiving a beautiful plaque and $400 worth of school programming from the Science Museum.

In reviewing applications, the award committee will look for such indicators as the following:

  • Professional development and coaching for teachers
  • Partnerships with other organizations
  • Applying math and science standards to curriculum
  • Support materials
  • Out-of-school as well as in-school experiences
  • Inclusion of families
  • Other creative ways of fostering interest in math and science

The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, December 10.
