Engineering Field Day

WaterThe Engineering Field Day is a hybrid of interactive presentation and hands-on activities for students. The 30-minute assembly demonstrates how engineers use science, math, and creative thinking to solve problems and create new technologies. This is followed by 25-minute hands-on activity sessions where students put their problem-solving abilities to the test!

Program Options: K-2 Engineering is only available as a one-day Field Day—a large-group assembly followed by up to six small-group sessions.

Residency Option

OPENING ASSEMBLY MAX: 250 students
ROTATION SESSION MAX: 60 students
TIME

HANDS-ON ACTIVITY SESSION FORMAT:

Activity sessions take place following the large-group assembly. Students will get a short introduction to the activity stations and be reminded to use the engineering design cycle to plan, make, test, and improve their designs as they work. Schools can plan up to six activity sessions per Field Day and should choose a format that will work best for their needs.

  • Structured (25 minutes, two hands-on activities)
Students rotate between two stations. Groups are evenly divided, and instructor will rotate the two groups at the halfway point.
  • Student-led (25 minutes, two to three hands-on activities)
Students may direct their own rotation between up to three stations. Students may rotate in any order they choose, and instructor will help students monitor their time.

ACTIVITY STATION OPTIONS:

Choose two for Structured format or up to three for Student-led format

  • Bridge building
Students work with colorful foam pieces and water to build a bridge that can span a "river" and support a small weight. Note: this activity requires water.
  • Wind tube flyers
Students use pipe cleaners to create a shape that floats, flips, or flies in a wind tube. Note: this activity requires access to electrical outlets.
  • Design with fasteners
Students use belt pieces with various fasteners to complete challenges like lifting a stuffed animal.

VOLUNTEERS:

This program requires schools to provide 6-8 volunteers in all activity sessions to assist with stations. Volunteers will receive training from instructor prior to the large-group assembly.
