Archaeology

Students will go behind the scenes at Çatalhöyük, a 9,000 year-old Turkish settlement and uncover clues about the lives of the New Stone Age people who inhabited this site. Demonstrations and large-scale props will introduce students to the fundamental concepts and the process of archaeological discovery!

Program Options: Archaeology is available only as an in-depth residency.

Residency Option

OPENING ASSEMBLY MAX: 250 students

TIME: 50 minutes

GRADE: Class sessions are designed for students in grades 1-6.

CLASS TOPICS:

In these in-depth classroom sessions, students will...

• Çatalhöyük Site Stories - Grades 1-3
  Investigate chips of pottery, bits of broken tools, and chard grains and propose theories for how people lived in Çatalhöyük over 9,000 years ago!
• Layers Over Time Stories - Grades 1-3
  Explore how do archaeologists understand the relation of different objects they find.
• Artifact Stories - Grades 3-6
  Transport into the future and excavate a unique site taken from modern life. Then imagine how future archaeologists will understand and explain life in 2000s.
• Micromorphology Stories - Grades 3-6
  Learn about human life through microscopic clues! Students will discover how the study of microscopic evidence gives insight into how people inhabit different locations.
