2. Traditional forms are still being made...
...though slightly modified. Irene Aguilar Alcántara is pictured painting an apaxtle, a traditional bowl form once used for everything from mixing tortilla dough to bathing. She learned this skill from her late mother, and says "siento que mi madre está pintando." ("I feel like my mother is painting.") Even though plastic has replaced ceramics as the cheapest option for kitchenware, a few women in the village still make apaxtles. While the designs remain unchanged, white acrylic paint has replaced white clay as the decorating material.
