Makers Make Workshops
These 2-3 hour, artist/instructor led sessions include the exploration of a topic, an introduction to new and familiar tools and plenty of time to make. Workshops can be customized, held at the Science Museum in the Learning Technologies Center or at your site.
Experiment with conductive thread, hand held computers, sensors, paper cutting, toy deconstruction and more. To find out more email make@smm.org.
Below are some examples of workshops we offer to groups and institutions.
Glowing Clothing
Learn how to wire LEDs and embed them in clothing, shoes, arm bands, or neck bands, to give yourself that carnival light and eerie glowing aura. Bring an article of clothing or piece of fabric that can be cut up and embedded with lights.
Misfit Toys
Deconstruct and rebuild unwanted and noisy moving toys. Find out about the electronics that make toys move and create your own moving and talking misfit toy to bring home.
Folded Structures
Learn the technique architects use to produce flexible, yet strong, structures. Then apply the technique by creating a folded structure that resembles the intricate pattern of crystals under a microscope or the curved, overlapping layers of a seashell.
Sensitive Machines
Build a machine that responds to light and sound sensors. You'll be introduced to the Pico Cricket, an education-friendly micro-controller.
Shadow Puppet Animation
Make cut-out silhouettes and use them to create stop- motion animation vignettes. This process is similar to how artist Lotte Reiniger created her animated fairy tales.
