See the Sound

See the SoundExplore the energy of sound by feeling and seeing the vibrations. Students observe the relationship between vibrations and sound using Tibetan singing bowls, tuning forks, laser light oscilloscopes, and more. Alter vibrations and observe how sound changes what is seen, felt and heard.

LEARNING LAB MAX: 32 students per lab session, with 3 lab sessions available per hour
TIME: 50 minutes
GRADE: Designed for Kindergarten - grade 2
COST: $6 per lab, per student. This does not include museum admission.

  • Sound is produced by vibrating objects.
  • Changing the speed of vibration affects pitch.
  • Sound can be observed through senses other than hearing.
  • Sound energy can be understood as a pattern or wave, which can be measured.

The Nature of Science and Engineering - Generate questions that can be answered when scientific knowledge is combined with knowledge gained from one's own observations or investigations. For example: Investigate the sounds produced by striking various objects.

Physical Science - Explain the relationship between the pitch of a sound, the rate of vibration of the source and factors that affect pitch. - Describe properties of waves, including speed, wavelength, frequency, and amplitude. - Explain how the vibration of particles in air and other materials results in the transfer of energy through sound waves.
