Ancient Secrets, Modern ScienceUse modern science techniques to gather information and unlock the secrets of past civilizations. Discover how magnetic surveying technology can help archaeologists find, record and analyze hidden objects. Students will examine reproductions of artifacts and develop ideas for how they were used.

LEARNING LAB MAX: 32 students per lab session, with 3 lab sessions available per hour

  • Discover how archaeologists use evidence and observations to make hypotheses about past cultures.
  • Understand that technology is a part of all human cultures.
  • Formulate reasonable explanations based on evidence collected from observations or experiments.



The Nature of Science and Engineering - Construct reasonable explanations based on evidence collected from observations or experiments. - Use tools to improve observations, and keep a record of observations made. - Identify and investigate a design solution and describe how it was used to solve an everyday problem. - Understand that different explanations for the same observations usually lead to making more observations and trying to resolve the differences. - Describe how science and engineering influence and are influenced by local traditions and beliefs.

Social Studies - Examine historical records, maps, and artifacts to answer basic questions about times and events in history, both ancient and more recent.

Learning Labs are available for school groups at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. or 12 p.m. They occur on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays during October-November and January-May. (In May, Tuesdays also become available.) Minimum/Maximum class size: 16/32 students. Reservations are required at least 2 weeks in advance for Learning Labs.
