#0910-3001 WEB CONTENT INTERN, Marketing. 15 hours per week. Paid, $8.00 per hour. Position Description: Research and write for the Science Museum of Minnesota's main website and staff Intranet. Work with various departments throughout the museum to update the website's content. Requirements: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; good organization skills and attention to detail; high level of initiative and follow through; familiarity with Microsoft Office suite. Prefer majors in Marketing, Communications, journalism, English or a related field.

#0910-3002 MARKETING PROMOTIONS INTERN, Marketing, Communications, and Sales, 10-15 hours per week, primarily weekday/daytime hours with some event work on evenings or weekends. Paid, $10.00 per hour. Position Description: The Marketing Promotions Intern will work with the Director of Marketing & Membership and other Marketing and Communications staff members to assist with the planning and implementation of a variety of museum marketing and community outreach events promoting our current exhibits. Learning Objectives/Goals: Gain experience in special events planning, marketing, public relations, promotions, and working within an office environment at a nonprofit. Must be able to work independently as well as a member of a team. Requirements: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; good organization skills and attention to detail; high level of initiative and follow through; familiarity with Microsoft Office suite. Prefer Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Business or Nonprofit Management majors but other applicants will be considered. Students of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

Position Description: Work with the program managers to promote the healthy development of youth by involving youth in the process of science and providing them with opportunities to contribute to others while learning. Requirements: Academic study in STEM, social science, education or child development. Excellent communication skills and the ability to arrive on time for scheduled work.

#0910-3004 AQUATIC INVERTEBRATES INTERN, Volunteers. 8-10 hours per week. Unpaid. Position Description: Develop and manage the museum's aquatic invertebrates program in the Mississippi River Gallery. Assist with the collection and documentation of a training manual that will empower volunteers to deliver the aquatic invertebrates program. Capture and format existing activities through an engaging and uniform medium. Create a training program for volunteers who provide the program. Practical educational experience with elementary education, science education, biology, aquatic ecology and/or environmental studies is preferred. Requirements: Enthusiasm working with young children and their families. Love of ongoing learning and a curiosity about the world around them. Strong communication skills and ability to interact positively with a wide variety of people of all ages preferred. Well-organized, detail oriented, creative and resourceful, with strong problem solving skills.

This includes training and coordination of public-contact and behind-the-scenes volunteers. Provide writing support for volunteer recognition activities, department newsletter and other communication mediums. Collaborate with VHQ staff to develop and maintain volunteer work schedules, accurate records and overall positive volunteer relations. Requirements: One to three years of experience working in a volunteer program or demonstrated experience as a volunteer. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, and ability to interact positively with a wide variety of people. Well-organized, detail oriented, creative and resourceful, with strong problem solving skills. Working knowledge of basic computer applications, such as Access, Volgistics, Word, PowerPoint or Excel is a plus.

Position Description: Gain practical experience in museum exhibit programs and operations specifically connected to the Science Museum of Minnesota's Special Exhibits and Science Buzz programs. Learning Goals/Objectives: Assist with routine tasks associated with the preparation for an upcoming Special Exhibit. Tasks include: copying training materials, assisting with the exhibit training operations, assisting with small non-technical tasks related to the installation of the exhibit. Write blog entries for Science Buzz that pertain to the content of the current special exhibit. Assist with the location and provide a list of print and on line sources and reference materials for upcoming Special Exhibits. Assist with the implementation and delivery of the current special exhibit's volunteer activities. Other duties related to the operations and programming of the Special Exhibit as assigned. Requirements: Interest in informal science education and museum programming and operations. Self motivated and excellent independent working skills a must. Outgoing personality, willing to initiate conversations with visitors of all ages. Interest in science and learning. Punctuality and dependability.

#0910-3009 PROSPECT RESEARCH INTERN, Development. 10-15 hours per week. Unpaid. Position Description: Assist the Prospect Research Director with performing research on-line as well as with proprietary databases. Data entry of research materials. Evaluate prospects in the moves management system and code prospect data files with results. Requirements: Degree or interest in non-profit management. Basic internet skills, WORD and Excel experience preferred.

Summer 2009 Internships

#0809-3022 WATER RESOURCES INTERN, St Croix Watershed Research Station. 20-40 hours per week. Paid, $10.00/hour. Position Description: The Water Resources intern will assist research staff with daily lab and field duties. In doing so this person will gain valuable laboratory skills and develop a better understanding of analytical chemistry techniques used in environmental chemistry. The intern will also be exposed to large-scale field research and become familiar with how research ideas are translated into experimental design. Requirements: Recent graduate with academic major in chemistry or geology, and a background in the natural and/or field sciences. Previous laboratory experience in a research setting. Strong interpersonal skills, resourceful, self-motivated, flexible and reliable.

#0809-3012 COLLECTORS' CORNER SATELLITE INTERN, School Services. 16 hours per week. Unpaid. Position Description: Research and develop reference materials and teaching tools for Collectors' Corner Satellite Program. Work with museum staff and volunteers, to identify items most commonly traded and reference materials that would best support the staff and volunteers at the Collectors' Corner Satellite locations. Create tools with a well-designed, understandable format, and accurate, well-researched content. Requirements: Focused area of education or current studies in one or more of the following areas: Environmental Studies, Elementary Education, Science Education, Geology, Biology, Museum Studies. Minimum one-year experience in education related field; ideally, informal, natural science related field. Strong organizational skills.

#0809-3013 PUBLIC PROGRAMS INTERN, Public Programs. 12-15 hours per week. Unpaid. Position Description: Assist Public Programs and Volunteer Department staff in reaching department goals and objectives for building, marketing and improving local Volunteer Variety Show. Develop and implement a marketing plan that will invite local artists to perform in this monthly event. Collaborate with museum volunteers and employees to develop and maintain a variety show calendar, database of community arts organizations and related recruitment resources and organize volunteer performance schedules. Requirements: One year of experience working in a volunteer program or nonprofit. Appreciation for local theater and arts. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, and ability to interact positively with a wide variety of people. Well-organized, detail oriented, creative and resourceful, with strong problem solving skills.

#0809-3003 ARCHAEOLOGY INTERN, Research and Collections, 10-hours per week, weekday/daytime hours. Unpaid. Position Description: The Archaeology Internship will expose the intern to archaeology in a museum setting. Duties will vary according to availability of projects and student interest. Students are encouraged to develop internship projects well in advance of the beginning of an internship through consultation with museum staff and faculty advisors. Learning Goals/Objectives: Project may include any combination of cataloguing artifacts and performing data entry, assisting with the storage and organization of archaeology collections, and/or researching artifacts. Requirements: Respect for and interest in other cultures, good research and problem solving skills, attention to detail, friendly presence and helpful attitude with good interpersonal skills and ability to work with others as well as independently. Experience with prehistoric material culture from the Midwest North America helpful but not required.

#0809-3015 ETHNOBOTANY INTERN, Science. 10-15 hours per week. Unpaid. Position Description: This internship targets American Indian undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in cultural studies, anthropology, ethnobotany, botany, history, sociology, museum studies, or another related field. The internship teaches the student museum studies protocols and procedures, traditional American Indian gardening, museum interpretation and cultural studies relating to plants. Requirements: Friendly presence and helpful attitude; good interpersonal skills and ability to work well with others as well as independently. Excellent attention to detail. Good research and problem solving skills. Respect for and interest in other cultures.

#0809-3019 EVALUATION AND RESEARCH INTERN, Evaluation and Research. 20 hours per week. Unpaid. Position Description: The intern will have three primary responsibilities: (1) participate in ongoing exhibit and program evaluations; (2) participate in analysis and reporting on studies of parent-child conversations and metacognition; (3) participate in the department's report distribution and dissemination. Requirements: A social science background is required. Some experience with evaluation or research in informal learning environments is preferred. Must have extremely strong organizational and analytic skills. Experience with Excel and SPSS is preferred.

Spring 2009 Internship

CORDRY INTERN, Anthropology. 20-hours per week. September 2009 - June 2010. Paid: Stipend. Position Description: Beginning in September 2009, the intern will spend twenty hours per week at the museum receiving training from Science Division staff in museology skills and the scientific study of material culture focusing on Mexican collections, and preparing for fieldwork. The period between December and March will be spent in Oaxaca, Mexico researching, documenting, and collecting artifacts for the museum's permanent collection. Afterward, the intern will return to the museum through June of 2010 to prepare ceramics, photographs and field notes for storage, exhibition and further study. A stipend is provided, along with funds for travel expenses and acquisitions. College credit has been arranged for previous interns. Requirements: full-time student (or recent graduate) from a Minnesota college or university; completion of at least the sophomore year; a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0; proficiency in Spanish; and relevant background and experience in anthropology, art, museum studies, or another appropriate discipline.
