I agree you should eat healthy, but if the plastic is edible, and what is inside the plastic is an apple...you're eating healthy. And you're eating plastic. I doubt they would allow this if it were not safe, but it still grosses me out.

That's true, but that's the case with any food - and you read about those all the time - just the other day Totino’s and Jeno’s Frozen Pizzas were recalled due to possible E. coli contamination...
It may be edible, but what other chemicals are you going to be puting in your body? You are going to injest the plastic every time you eat the product, instead of a 1 how ever many chance of getting the food with the bacterial infection. Sounds pretty unnecessary if you ask me!

All things are edible because you can taste everything. Somethings might not taste very good at all, but they are still edible. Some things might poison you, too, or might not be so good for you. That's all I have to say

At first, I thought, `"well, if it's edible...sure" Then I thought about all the preservatives we're already putting in our bodies and the recent studies that have shown that microwaving food in or covered with plastic is really bad for you. I don't think it's good at all now. One of the bigest pitfalls I've always seen with "food science" (genetic crop engineering, growth hormones to produce more milk, etc.) is that it's not researched enough before it's put into practice and then we find out in 10 to 20 years all of the negative side effects through a host of new illnesses and disorders.
The thing is... we're not made of plastic and we don't know enough about exactly how our bodies react to plastics, espeicially new ones.... If you are what you eat, why would you want to be plastic? Even just a little bit?
I would consider eating it if it was guaranteed safe. I wouldn't want to find out ten years from now that edible plastic causes some kind of disease.

I believe that eating plastic it not as bad as second hand smoke as you said and further more think that, though plastic is something that I would never eat, I still beleive it wouldn't kill you.
It all depends on how safe it will be for the environment. I think that it would take the food longer to decompose. But if it turns out to be safe then i dont see the harm in it

Why not? The poll does say it's "edible" plastic which I assume means it's guaranteed not to kill you. It'd be interesting to have flavored plastic, e.g. apple-flavor and apple-texture plastic as a replacement for the wax currently on apples.

It would really depend on what it tastes like. I'm sure that if it was unnoticed by the people eating, it wouldn't make much of a difference to some people. It also depends on whether it is safe for our bodies or not. Overall, I wouldn't really see a problem with it.
I just really don't trust food in plastic especially if it's for long term (more than a day's) use or storage. Since most people reuse them it might be a good idea but I will continue to reuse glass bottles and glass storage containers for that matter.

Nothing has been said about whether the plastic can be digested by the body. If it can't what can prevent it from piling up and causing an obstruction in the intestines?

I don't know what sort of plastic could be considered edible, but without any further information. I would say anything that the body cannot digest whether plastic or wax like should be considered toxic, and who in the right mind would honestly eat plastic??

Plastic coated food... what?! Just because there's a small chance of getting sick from something it dosen't mean we should PLASTIC COAT IT!! If this goes through, why don't we go the whole way and live in plastic bubbles all our lives in case, heaven forbid, there's a chance of getting some dirt on ourselves. It's true, we really are bubble-wrapping everything.. it won't kill us to eat a germ here and there, our immune systems are for something after all. I don't care if the plastic is edible or not, the point im getting at is why do we need all these protections on everything...hand sanitizers, antibacterial soaps, now possibly plastic coated food... we live on a planet with germs and our bodies were made to deal with them by learning from exposure. Why not eliminate food entirely and live off pills for that matter. Yuck.
It should be legal to murder the executive committees of the companies that come up with this stuff. I mean C'MON PEOPLE. Supposedly pesticides are "edible" in small doses, otherwise it wouldn't be legal to sell most of the crops that come out of north america. Considering how many carcinogens have been discovered recently in all our food, do you really trust what our governments consider to be "Safe"? If you do then you're a goddamned fool. It may not kill you now, but it will eventually. I would not consider cancer to be an epidemic so much as the lack of regulation with our foods, and the extent to which corporations will go to make money, or rather save money, by slowly poisoning the population. In any case believe what you want, but you won't catch me eating "edible plastic". LOL
I probably wouldn't because it doesn't sound good for the environment. If the effects on the environment, as well as the potential help or harm to our bodies was very-well researched, I might.

Most fruit such as apples and pears are placed in air tight warehouses after being harvested.
The air is then pumped out and replaced by nitrogen. Since nitrogen is an inert gas the fruit does not exidize or spoil as fast. That is why we can have good fruit in the middle of winter (along with the stuff shipped in from So. America!) Using edible plastic instead of wax (made froom petroleum) isn't so different.
What about salt? water? a ton of minerals that we need for survival?
If the outer wrapper is edible, one then eats the bacteria from the handlers.
I think that edable plastic with all the stuff on the news about how plastic could kill us I wouldn't dare eat plastic.

I think that edible plastic is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cheap, I mean what do do you get out of it? Not getting sick, what are the chances of you getting it!
It would have to taste like the fruit and make it easier to wash. And make it last longer. And it couldn't be like those chocolate mini doughnuts you get at the gas station. Those things are ALL plastic.

Well plastic is kinda cheap, but you do get a lot of use so its a good deal. If you buy plastic you don't have to store food in it so you can get a lot of use out of the iteam. If you store food in it you won't get sick because it is plastic bacteria could grow in it if you leave it out, but if it is refrigerated or frooze you won't neccicarily get sick

Well, I guess in a way that is true. That gets into an interesting debate about what the word "natural" means. Many things have natural ingredients in them but that hardly means they are safe or good for us. Bleach for example.

I think ideally it wouldn't affect the taste at all. Consumers would surely abandon it if it meant a compromise in the one thing that really drives food choices.
we should stop using hazardous chemicals on our food in the first place. and covering them with more "safer" chemicals doesn't sound like a very wise idea.

I made a smoothie and was mixing it with a platic fork and a pice of the fork got chiped off into the smoothie is that safe to eat. And I would like an answer pretty quick befor my smoothie melts.
Well, while I think your probably being glib, I don't think you are in dire danger from ingesting a small chip of plastic. This product would be quite different from the plastic used in forks which you should generally try not to eat. I generally try to stick to the food on the fork and not the plasticware itself.
ps - These comments go for plastic spoons, knives, coffee stirrers, and yes...even sporks.

It seems like these poll-takers don't realize that most fruits and veggies at the grovery store are wax-coated already. If it bothers anyone, there are products like FIT to take it off safely before they eat it. You can feel the difference in texture after you use it...it's weird. But nice.

"Edible Plastic" makes me think of and remember quizically, that candy product of years ago : WAX POP BOTTLES. Where you'd eat that waxy, plastic, bottle-concoction just to get at the thin stream of colored syrup
.(it was quite a mouthful of Chewy Plastic that you had to somehow get down your throat, all for the anticipated REWARD of getting to the colorful strip of cherry-syrup)

Um no. That is above wrong. We weren't made to eat plastic, and the food that comes from stores should already be good. It is their job, the people who get the food ready for the stores, to make sure our food is fit to eat. I know I like water that tastes like plastic, but I would never EAT it. even if the, plastic is edible, the plastic may have been touching other things making it dirty and the you are ingesting it. i think it would be safer to remove plastic before eating it for safety reasons. the food would also probably taste differently than before edible plastic.
