Should we get rid of the US penny?

History, anda respect for the past. We've always had it and it serves a purpose besides being utilitarian. It makes one think of times past. It shouldn't cost more to produce it, though. How about having a penny, but a totally redesigned one that saves money in production yet shows somethign interesting about this nation and its roots or where it's going?

Why do we even quote prices with two decimals? And what's up with gas prices being quoted at 1/1000th of a dollar? We don't have a 1/10th cent piece, why are they allowed to charge it that way? My point is, it's not about giving back the right change, it's about efficiency. IF we discontinued the penny, they would become rarer and more fun to collect. Kinda like when an artist dies. But as for our economy, if it wasn't for the quarter, I'd say get rid of nickels too. All we really need is dimes and half dollars, and prices should be quoted in tenth's of a dollar.. "ON SALE MILK $2.4" But that's a little extreme. Since pennies and nickels cost twice as much to make than they are worth, I say at least lose the penny..

If were to get rid of the penny and nickel school children would have an easier time adapting to the metric system that is international. I feel that the penny should be eliminated for purely practical reasons. It is my personal opinion that the use of the
penny as currency leads to unnessecary complications that make buisness less efficient. This is quite unfortunate because then there is less time for people such as myself to attempt to effectively deal with issues of much greater significance. I would appreciate it very much if I did not have to deal with the strange obscurities and petty irregularities of the penny's monetary usage on a daily basis.

I we want to respect our history, we need to get rid of the penny. The leaders and people of the nation have always seen past sentimentalism and discontinued currency which has become obsolete due to inflation or lack of utility (half-cent, 50 cent piece, two dollar bill). To end this tradition would mean an end to a great tradition of logical economics in the U.S. Monetary transactions can be rounded to the nearest 5 or ten cents for cash transactions, or rounded to the nearest penny for electronic (credit, debit) transactions, as they are today. The only reason valid reason to retain the penny is emotional, that the penny holds a special place in the minds of people because its a different color or whatever. Lincoln can be remembered on the five dollar bill and on his birthday, he will be remembered without the penny.

The penny makes you think of times past because it is so outdated. To say it is utilitarian is just plain false. The only time I use pennies is to lug my bucket of them to the CoinStar machine to collect my two dollars. And to redesign the penny to make it cheaper to make would completely negate the sentimentalism in your heart for it, wouldn't it? Lincoln is on the Five, and he has a holiday all his own, we are not forgetting him by discontinuing the penny. Saying we can't get exact change without the penny makes no sense because we don't get exact change now, ITS ROUNDED TO THE NEAREST PENNY. Consumers would not get short-changed, because taxes and shopping for more than one item produces a randomizing effect no matter how companies set up their pricing. THERE IS NO VALID ARGUMENT FOR ITS CONTINUED PRODUCTION. Except maybe to give the zinc and copper corporations a little more business.

Pennies allow for a more flexible pricing structure for all goods and services. Pennies also allow for flexibility in taxation. However, keeping the penny because "we've always had it" is ridiculous--we've also had the Electoral College for a very long time--it doesn't mean that it makes sense to keep it as it always was in a current and different era. Making a less expensive penny makes a lot of sense--continuing to manufacture it inefficiently doesn't.

Keeping the penny is silly and a waste of valuable time and money, both in the creation of over priced pennies and in the time wasted counting out exact change. Even if every business in the country rounded up, and you paid no more than 4 cents more than you do right now (which would never happen, everyone would round down just as often as up) in the end if you'd bought something every single day (you have a serious spending problem) 0.04 * 365 = $14.60 You are out a soul crushing $14 which could be a tax cut, or spent on education, or any of a million worthy causes, not to mention the money saved minting the darn things. Keeping the penny is as ridiculous as not switching to the metric system, both signs of an incredibly ignorant country, which I'm sorry to say, as I am a very proud American, we are an exceptionally ignorant people as a whole.

I think that you are ridiculous. First of all, everybody buys at least one thing a day. If you don't, then you're 14 and you waste your daddys allowance on one purchase then have to wait a week. In fact, people do need to eat every day... and most americans do not have the time in this fast-paced society to eat at home. So, it's more than that. But anyway, its all ridiculous. Who cares how much money we will lose if we get rid/keep the penny? I think we're splitting hairs here. Maybe we should concern ourselves with issues that matter.

The Australian 1¢ and 2¢ coins were withdrawn from service in 1992. Stores still price things how they want (eg $4.97). If you are buying just that item it will be rouded down to $4.95. If you are buying more than one item they are all added up as-is and the final total is rounded. It works just fine. When I visit the US I'm always amazed at how many pennies my pockets seem to accumulate!

Art Wolters says:

The half-cent was discontinued after 1857 when Congress correctly decided it was a measure of value that had no consequence.

Since then the value of our currency has dropped by a factor of 100 or more. (We call it rising "cost of living" but it is really declining money value).

It now takes only 6 seconds to earn one cent at minimum wage, and I bet you can't name one single item you can buy for a dime.

If we apply the same standard of value that Congress used in 1857 we could eliminate every coin less than the half dollar, and use prices and wages with ONE DECIMAL POINT. That is, this bag of carrots is $0.8 and admission to that movie is $4.5

EXACT CHANGE doesn't mean anything if the pennies and nickels are worthless! In fact, they are already out of use because people throw them away or allow them to pile up in their sock drawer (while the Government spends millions of dollars, and scarce metals, to replace them).

In summary, remove pennies and nickels from circulation after a few months to allow people to cash them in, and we would ease the current shortage of copper. Keep dimes as $0.1 and stop minting quarters, but revalue them at $0.3 so as to be consistent in getting rid of the 1/100 dollar designation. As a last detail, stop printing dollar bills so that the dollar coin will catch on and we'd save more money that we use printing that denomination on short-lived paper.

Maybe we could finally get rid of the string of 9s on all the gasoline signs. Won't $2.5 make a lot more sense than $2.499 a gallon. Either way, 15 gallons would cost $37.5

Actually, prices would average out to be exactly the same. Let's say you bought ten items using the penny, and the same ten items rounding off to the nearest nickel:

PRICE WITH PENNY PRICE WHEN ROUNDING
$1.00 $1.00
$1.01 $1.00
$1.02 $1.00
$1.03 $1.05
$1.04 $1.05
$1.05 $1.05
$1.06 $1.05
$1.07 $1.05
$1.08 $1.10
$1.09 $1.10
TOTAL $10.45 TOTAL $10.45

So, half the time you round UP to the nearest nickel and pay more, and half the time you round DOWN to the nearest nickel and pay less. It all evens out.

They already do. Sales tax is a percentage of the price. If you bought items worth, say, $5.50, and your sales tax was 6.25, then your bill would come to $5.84375. The store would round that down to $5.84. Check a few sales receipts, especially those from gas stations which spell everything out.

No -- if you buy exactly 1 gallon of gas it will be $2.999, which would be rounded up to $3.00, same as it is now.

accutally you could keep collecting pennies because if ur really an avid penny collector you'd pay anything to get a rare penny so if they all go out the longer you have it the more it is! I mean imagine 50 yrs form now all those pennies you have turn into 5.00 of 500 dollars EACH! you'd be one rich person.

I think that the penny should be kept because it is an important part of our history. It is also convinient if you a little bit extra so you don;t have to use up a nickel. Also if you are a cashier sometimes you have to use pennies.

No, we should get rid of the penny. It has almost no value and probably costs too much to make. It takes up to much space.

We should totally keep the penny. There is still some candy that is only 1 cent! We could just stop making so many, 'cause life would be so different without it. we would have to put more money in when we are making a wish on a wishing well, we would have to round up, and if u think about i, if we round up about 100 times, that is a whole dollar more!!!! : )

Erin Schmidtke says:

The U.S. penny should not be kept because, financially, it is simply a waste to make. It's a pretty straightforward issue. Also, since the average American earns a penny every two seconds or so at work, if it takes more than two seconds to pick up a penny you find on the ground, it's a waste because that time could be used more efficiently. Just round everything to the nearest nickel. Losing or gaining a few extra cents is not that big of a deal.

I really don't feel that we need to make items that cost more to produce than they are worth. This is simple economics, and I think that tradition in something as small as the face of a president should not waste government money that goes to other causes. On top of that, there is nothing in the united states that costs less than 10 cents, and 10 cents is tough to find. With that in mind, why on earth do we have currencies less than 10 cents? The rounded amount couldn't make an actual difference in the life of even the poorest person. Think about it Bernackie...

I think that the US cent should be kept, but to motivate people into keeping it, there should be collector's pennies. This could also work if the penny is discontinued.

a penny is a part of history, why not keep them. without a part of the US coins you will recive just more change in return when you're buying something. also to remove penneys would make all the prices that are $.99 or anything like that would have to be rounded up to $1.00 and we would lose money.

It is completely false. The mighty Mythbusters tackled this in their first season, and found that air resistance makes the penny tumble, slowing its speed. Video here. Uncle Cecil came to a similar conclusion more than 20 years earlier.

There has just been so much inflation that the penny really isn't a significant amount any more. I mean, what's $100 now? Not much.Compare $100 to a penny. Point stated.
