History, anda respect for the past. We've always had it and it serves a purpose besides being utilitarian. It makes one think of times past. It shouldn't cost more to produce it, though. How about having a penny, but a totally redesigned one that saves money in production yet shows somethign interesting about this nation and its roots or where it's going?
My mom and I say we should keep the penny because it's the president's face, it's history, and fun to collect. My grandpa says we should get rid of it because it costs more to make it than it's worth. He says, "that doesn't make 'cents."
penny's are wothless. nobody actually buys things with them. sure they have president lincoln on them and he should be remembered, but instead of cluttering someones house with them we should just make a memorial for him.
i think the penny is neat...plus if you keep a jar of them everyone knows they add up...i get tips at my job and its mostly coins and when i went to cash them in the other day its was like 113 dollars...who couldnt use that?
Why do we even quote prices with two decimals? And what's up with gas prices being quoted at 1/1000th of a dollar? We don't have a 1/10th cent piece, why are they allowed to charge it that way? My point is, it's not about giving back the right change, it's about efficiency. IF we discontinued the penny, they would become rarer and more fun to collect. Kinda like when an artist dies. But as for our economy, if it wasn't for the quarter, I'd say get rid of nickels too. All we really need is dimes and half dollars, and prices should be quoted in tenth's of a dollar.. "ON SALE MILK $2.4" But that's a little extreme. Since pennies and nickels cost twice as much to make than they are worth, I say at least lose the penny..
the penny does just get in the way.
you cant use them in vending machines
or anything..i know its helpful when you have to pay like 57cents or something..but it takes up money and they do get in the way..plus people dont want keep them anyway..thats why they are always on the street!
it is possible to have currency exchnge without pennies, but then stores would have to sell things for round prices, and the government would have to raise taxes in increments of five, rather than one. stores would be unable to make things look like they are cheaper, and the government would not be able to make taxes look like they are increasing slower. to remove pennies would mess up the economy
If were to get rid of the penny and nickel school children would have an easier time adapting to the metric system that is international. Dimes and dollars fit well into the metric system and it's also easier for children to retain, especially those children who have difficulty with remembering numbers.
well maybe your rite but wat would we do with abraham lincoln then? he would be very angry and he was one of the best presidents ever!!!!!!!!!! im just asking u to reconsider...
i think not making any more pennies is a great idea. there are plenty of pennies in circulation already, so we can continue using pennies, but stop making them. that way, everyone is happy. : )
Well, that is a great idea! But it's not possible. People throw away pennies, lose them, shove them in places and never use them, I mean, we could slow down the rate we make pennies, that's more reasonable, great idea!
woo! go pennys! yea! plus if we dont have pennys then how am i supposed to get good luck? huh? yea thats what i thought! it wont make any sense to say "find a penny pick it up all the day youll have good luck!" if theres no pennys! so LONG LIVE PENNYS!!!!!!!!!
granted pennies are kind of annoying to carry around and to have to give changed back to customers and stuff, but they are part of history and they do cost more to make than to actually use...which kind of biites! they are prettycool though!!
I feel that the penny should be eliminated for purely practical reasons. It is my personal opinion that the use of the
penny as currency leads to unnessecary complications that make buisness less efficient. This is quite unfortunate because then there is less time for people such as myself to attempt to effectively deal with issues of much greater significance. I would appreciate it very much if I did not have to deal with the strange obscurities and petty irregularities of the penny's monetary usage on a daily basis.
you should pick up and save all the pennies you find. The last time I cashed in all my pennies, I got $52.00. That was enough to buy my BAM skateboard! I will keep saving all my pennies to save up for something else I really want.
The half-cent coin was taken out of circulation in 1857 because its value was too low to be useful. The half-cent was worth about 10 cents in todays currency. Why are we so hesitant to get rid of this obsolete, money-wasting coin that most often ends up in landfills? Let coin collectors preserve the historical value of the penny.
The federal government has too much power. We need to end their oppression of our exisistance. Without money there will be no taxes and our lives will be improved.
I we want to respect our history, we need to get rid of the penny. The leaders and people of the nation have always seen past sentimentalism and discontinued currency which has become obsolete due to inflation or lack of utility (half-cent, 50 cent piece, two dollar bill). To end this tradition would mean an end to a great tradition of logical economics in the U.S. Monetary transactions can be rounded to the nearest 5 or ten cents for cash transactions, or rounded to the nearest penny for electronic (credit, debit) transactions, as they are today. The only reason valid reason to retain the penny is emotional, that the penny holds a special place in the minds of people because its a different color or whatever. Lincoln can be remembered on the five dollar bill and on his birthday, he will be remembered without the penny.
The penny makes you think of times past because it is so outdated. To say it is utilitarian is just plain false. The only time I use pennies is to lug my bucket of them to the CoinStar machine to collect my two dollars. And to redesign the penny to make it cheaper to make would completely negate the sentimentalism in your heart for it, wouldn't it? Lincoln is on the Five, and he has a holiday all his own, we are not forgetting him by discontinuing the penny. Saying we can't get exact change without the penny makes no sense because we don't get exact change now, ITS ROUNDED TO THE NEAREST PENNY. Consumers would not get short-changed, because taxes and shopping for more than one item produces a randomizing effect no matter how companies set up their pricing. THERE IS NO VALID ARGUMENT FOR ITS CONTINUED PRODUCTION. Except maybe to give the zinc and copper corporations a little more business.
To get rid of the penny would be the best thing the federal government has done in a long time. You know the penny's a waste when a majority of the public doesn't care to keep it on them. There's the change cups at cashiers for have a penny give a penny....nuff said.
pennies are historic. they have been around forever. Even though the pennies aren't worth much, they still mean a lot to our country because they do have the presidents face on them and they may mean a lot to other people
Pennies allow for a more flexible pricing structure for all goods and services. Pennies also allow for flexibility in taxation. However, keeping the penny because "we've always had it" is ridiculous--we've also had the Electoral College for a very long time--it doesn't mean that it makes sense to keep it as it always was in a current and different era. Making a less expensive penny makes a lot of sense--continuing to manufacture it inefficiently doesn't.
Keeping the penny is silly and a waste of valuable time and money, both in the creation of over priced pennies and in the time wasted counting out exact change. Even if every business in the country rounded up, and you paid no more than 4 cents more than you do right now (which would never happen, everyone would round down just as often as up) in the end if you'd bought something every single day (you have a serious spending problem) 0.04 * 365 = $14.60 You are out a soul crushing $14 which could be a tax cut, or spent on education, or any of a million worthy causes, not to mention the money saved minting the darn things. Keeping the penny is as ridiculous as not switching to the metric system, both signs of an incredibly ignorant country, which I'm sorry to say, as I am a very proud American, we are an exceptionally ignorant people as a whole.
I think that you are ridiculous. First of all, everybody buys at least one thing a day. If you don't, then you're 14 and you waste your daddys allowance on one purchase then have to wait a week. In fact, people do need to eat every day... and most americans do not have the time in this fast-paced society to eat at home. So, it's more than that. But anyway, its all ridiculous. Who cares how much money we will lose if we get rid/keep the penny? I think we're splitting hairs here. Maybe we should concern ourselves with issues that matter.
Gotta disagree with you on the metric system. The effort required to change would be enormous, and the benefit slight. The area where it makes a difference -- international trade -- has already switched.
Gotta disagree with you on the intelligence of our fellow countrymen, too. Not that I'm questionig your patriotism! ;-)
The Australian 1¢ and 2¢ coins were withdrawn from service in 1992. Stores still price things how they want (eg $4.97). If you are buying just that item it will be rouded down to $4.95. If you are buying more than one item they are all added up as-is and the final total is rounded. It works just fine. When I visit the US I'm always amazed at how many pennies my pockets seem to accumulate!
I find that have a lower form of a doller bill is a waste of space. I find that having a 1 cent piece is a waste of my valuble time. Now as the price of almost everything in the U.S. we almost have no need for such a thing. I mean if you have to pay for a pair of shoes that cost $29.99 wouldn't it be easyer to pay $30.00.
The half-cent was discontinued after 1857 when Congress correctly decided it was a measure of value that had no consequence.
Since then the value of our currency has dropped by a factor of 100 or more. (We call it rising "cost of living" but it is really declining money value).
It now takes only 6 seconds to earn one cent at minimum wage, and I bet you can't name one single item you can buy for a dime.
If we apply the same standard of value that Congress used in 1857 we could eliminate every coin less than the half dollar, and use prices and wages with ONE DECIMAL POINT. That is, this bag of carrots is $0.8 and admission to that movie is $4.5
EXACT CHANGE doesn't mean anything if the pennies and nickels are worthless! In fact, they are already out of use because people throw them away or allow them to pile up in their sock drawer (while the Government spends millions of dollars, and scarce metals, to replace them).
In summary, remove pennies and nickels from circulation after a few months to allow people to cash them in, and we would ease the current shortage of copper. Keep dimes as $0.1 and stop minting quarters, but revalue them at $0.3 so as to be consistent in getting rid of the 1/100 dollar designation. As a last detail, stop printing dollar bills so that the dollar coin will catch on and we'd save more money that we use printing that denomination on short-lived paper.
Maybe we could finally get rid of the string of 9s on all the gasoline signs. Won't $2.5 make a lot more sense than $2.499 a gallon. Either way, 15 gallons would cost $37.5
After reading these previous responses, I am forced to agreee with those who think that the penny is inefficient. Rounding prices would change things by a maximum of 4cents, and eliminaing the cost of producing the penny would far make up the deficit.
Actually, prices would average out to be exactly the same. Let's say you bought ten items using the penny, and the same ten items rounding off to the nearest nickel:
PRICE WITH PENNY
PRICE WHEN ROUNDING
$1.00
$1.00
$1.01
$1.00
$1.02
$1.00
$1.03
$1.05
$1.04
$1.05
$1.05
$1.05
$1.06
$1.05
$1.07
$1.05
$1.08
$1.10
$1.09
$1.10
TOTAL $10.45
TOTAL $10.45
So, half the time you round UP to the nearest nickel and pay more, and half the time you round DOWN to the nearest nickel and pay less. It all evens out.
They already do. Sales tax is a percentage of the price. If you bought items worth, say, $5.50, and your sales tax was 6.25, then your bill would come to $5.84375. The store would round that down to $5.84. Check a few sales receipts, especially those from gas stations which spell everything out.
why get rid of the pennies as you would most likely then raise the price of everything on the market by at least one cent or more. Which does in the long run quickly add up. So long live the penny!!
i think that we should get rid of them because 1: most people have credit cards or a check book, 2: not alot of people will actually take the time to get the exact change when there is a line behind them waiting to pay for something... but i also think that we should keep it because it has the presidents face on it....
Just like the silver dollar, pennies are a waste of room. Nobody really uses it anyways. If it's only purpose is historical purposes then you might as well frame it or something. They're just clutter, and it weights you down.
accutally you could keep collecting pennies because if ur really an avid penny collector you'd pay anything to get a rare penny so if they all go out the longer you have it the more it is! I mean imagine 50 yrs form now all those pennies you have turn into 5.00 of 500 dollars EACH! you'd be one rich person.
I think that the penny should be kept because it is an important part of our history. It is also convinient if you a little bit extra so you don;t have to use up a nickel. Also if you are a cashier sometimes you have to use pennies.
We should totally keep the penny. There is still some candy that is only 1 cent! We could just stop making so many, 'cause life would be so different without it. we would have to put more money in when we are making a wish on a wishing well, we would have to round up, and if u think about i, if we round up about 100 times, that is a whole dollar more!!!! : )
The U.S. penny should not be kept because, financially, it is simply a waste to make. It's a pretty straightforward issue. Also, since the average American earns a penny every two seconds or so at work, if it takes more than two seconds to pick up a penny you find on the ground, it's a waste because that time could be used more efficiently. Just round everything to the nearest nickel. Losing or gaining a few extra cents is not that big of a deal.
I really don't feel that we need to make items that cost more to produce than they are worth. This is simple economics, and I think that tradition in something as small as the face of a president should not waste government money that goes to other causes. On top of that, there is nothing in the united states that costs less than 10 cents, and 10 cents is tough to find. With that in mind, why on earth do we have currencies less than 10 cents? The rounded amount couldn't make an actual difference in the life of even the poorest person. Think about it Bernackie...
I think that the US cent should be kept, but to motivate people into keeping it, there should be collector's pennies. This could also work if the penny is discontinued.
Discontinue making pennies and nickels untill they can pay back China, then continue normally.(The way things are going, this should take only about 56 years.)
keep the penny and don't lose it. pennies are awesome and we need to keep them alive!! dont let anything happen to wonderful penny made of sweet copper die. make it worth 5 cents and replace the so called nickel, that would then turn into 1 cent. always remember the good say
a penny is a part of history, why not keep them. without a part of the US coins you will recive just more change in return when you're buying something. also to remove penneys would make all the prices that are $.99 or anything like that would have to be rounded up to $1.00 and we would lose money.
keep the penny and don't lose it. pennies are awesome and we need to keep them alive!! dont let anything happen to wonderful penny made of sweet copper die. make it worth 5 cents and replace the so called nickel, that would then turn into 1 cent. always remember the good say
how many times in the last week have you used a penny not think about how many that have been made the only thing pennys are good for these days is parking meters and for little kids to pick up and say "find a penny pick it up and all the day youll have good luck"
It is completely false. The mighty Mythbusters tackled this in their first season, and found that air resistance makes the penny tumble, slowing its speed. Video here. Uncle Cecil came to a similar conclusion more than 20 years earlier.
There has just been so much inflation that the penny really isn't a significant amount any more. I mean, what's $100 now? Not much.Compare $100 to a penny. Point stated.
History, anda respect for the past. We've always had it and it serves a purpose besides being utilitarian. It makes one think of times past. It shouldn't cost more to produce it, though. get rid of it
why what good will that do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:(
it has the president of the united states on it yu don't want to get rid of him
I like that idae very much.
no I think we should get rid of the penny
It's true, it costs about 3 cents to make 1 penny, by continuing to make them, we are increasing our national debt.
Actually its 1.23c 2 make
but lincoln is still on the 5 dollar bill!!!! just saying so he is still on something
i totally agree lincoln is on the 5 dollar bill! we NEED to get rid of the penny it's just change in my purse i HATE the penny
so you want to spend more money in a useless attempt to save some?
The penny is dead, long live the knickle.
how about no. our penny should not be changes. all we r doing is chngeing money noone even know what the 20 dollar bill looks like!
penny's are wothless. nobody actually buys things with them. sure they have president lincoln on them and he should be remembered, but instead of cluttering someones house with them we should just make a memorial for him.
Duh, there already is a Memorial for him--Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC!
Look at the back of a penny. See the building? That's the Lincoln Memorial.
we must keep the penny. It's a great coin!!!!!!!!!
THE PENNY SHOULD GO NO AND IFS OR BUTTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the penny shouldnt go because its part of american hisrtory
A penny earned is a penny saved. Pennies are great nothing like a shiny penny,
i think the penny is neat...plus if you keep a jar of them everyone knows they add up...i get tips at my job and its mostly coins and when i went to cash them in the other day its was like 113 dollars...who couldnt use that?
Oh yeah? I lugged 300 pennies to the bank the other day, and guess what it got me? Three bucks! Yippee...
Why do we even quote prices with two decimals? And what's up with gas prices being quoted at 1/1000th of a dollar? We don't have a 1/10th cent piece, why are they allowed to charge it that way? I agree, the penny should stay, it's American history, but if wo could do one that just says "1c" on it would work in my opinion.
the penny does just get in the way.
you cant use them in vending machines
or anything..i know its helpful when you have to pay like 57cents or something..but it takes up money and they do get in the way..plus people dont want keep them anyway..thats why they are always on the street!
i think you are right... if we could find another use like vending machines, it would help keep the penny in circulation.
What other way can we gve and receive exact change.

well maybe your rite but wat would we do with abraham lincoln then? he would be very angry and he was one of the best presidents ever!!!!!!!!!! im just asking u to reconsider...
abe's already on hte five-dollar bill, which is better.
Why make more pennies and nickles? Can't we continue to use the ones already minted?
i think not making any more pennies is a great idea. there are plenty of pennies in circulation already, so we can continue using pennies, but stop making them. that way, everyone is happy. : )

i like pennys to i think ther great.
We should keep making pennies, but make them from a new matierial. That way they're cheaper.
The penny should remain in our US currency because it shows the importance of one of our preidents.
granted pennies are kind of annoying to carry around and to have to give changed back to customers and stuff, but they are part of history and they do cost more to make than to actually use...which kind of biites! they are prettycool though!!
In Canada, they electoplate their steel coins and they only cost a fraction of the face value.
If it takes more than a penny, what is the point of making them; they only waste money! We should make a less expensive penny.
i think your wrong its part of american history

how will we get those flattened souvenier pennies w/out pennies?

yes
the penny has one of our greatest presidents on it

PENNIES RULE!
keep the penny
l
we should keep the penny otherwise it would be veary hard to make change!
We could just round prices off to the nearest nickel. This already happens with the Take A Penny / Leave a Penny jars.
PENNIES ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!! LONG LIVE THE PENNY!!!!!!!

pennys stink
i hate pennies!!!!
Penny's rock my world! yeah!!
i like the penny. only when they're shiny.
pennies rock
dont you wish there wrthless
no I like the penny. Pennies rock government !!!!
make it out of a different material that is more cost efficient!

I like it
Well because I LOVE THE PenNy!!
It would add up to to a bigger prise.
yes but 4 cents can add up... if you do the math correctly it adds up to 4 dollers per 100 what evers
yes we should get ride of pennies. there are no point to having them. all they do is take up space in ur wallet. get ride of a one cent coin!
we should keep the penny because if we get ride of it then it will be more expensive in the long run
pennies are awesome!!!! just think, everything would be more expensive, and pennies are part of american history.
Actually, prices would average out to be exactly the same. Let's say you bought ten items using the penny, and the same ten items rounding off to the nearest nickel:
So, half the time you round UP to the nearest nickel and pay more, and half the time you round DOWN to the nearest nickel and pay less. It all evens out.
Interesting, but i still think we should keep the penny
but are stores willing to round down?
They already do. Sales tax is a percentage of the price. If you bought items worth, say, $5.50, and your sales tax was 6.25, then your bill would come to $5.84375. The store would round that down to $5.84. Check a few sales receipts, especially those from gas stations which spell everything out.
I Hate penny's!!!!!!! Get of them Imediatly!!!! Please!!!!!!
That is a rude comment. I have a lucky penny and I don't want to get rid of it
I like pennies. They are awesome.
why get rid of the pennies as you would most likely then raise the price of everything on the market by at least one cent or more. Which does in the long run quickly add up. So long live the penny!!
I think we should keep the penny because otherwise we have to round it up to a nickel.
And who wants to pay more money then we have to?
Pennies are awesome!!!!!!!!
i think that we should get rid of them because 1: most people have credit cards or a check book, 2: not alot of people will actually take the time to get the exact change when there is a line behind them waiting to pay for something... but i also think that we should keep it because it has the presidents face on it....
no
If we get rid of the penny, then phrases like "penny for your thoughts" and "my two cents" will make absolutely no sense
Kind of like "you sound like a broken record" does now? ;-)
Just like the silver dollar, pennies are a waste of room. Nobody really uses it anyways. If it's only purpose is historical purposes then you might as well frame it or something. They're just clutter, and it weights you down.
long live the penny!
pennies leave clutter in my pocket and i usually end up losing them anyway.
It's penny what can I say?
What would happen to the saying "a penny saved is a penny earned"?
I thimk it means you earn what you deserve if you do a sertain amount of things you should earn a day's work
so now gas will be even more expensive
instead of 2.99 and 9/10 it will be 3.05
No -- if you buy exactly 1 gallon of gas it will be $2.999, which would be rounded up to $3.00, same as it is now.
Yes-- the US penny should be kept. Anyway, what other way there could be to show exact change in cash.
I think the penny should stay. I like to collect them. If they go away I cant add to my collection.
accutally you could keep collecting pennies because if ur really an avid penny collector you'd pay anything to get a rare penny so if they all go out the longer you have it the more it is! I mean imagine 50 yrs form now all those pennies you have turn into 5.00 of 500 dollars EACH! you'd be one rich person.
I think the penny should stay. I collect pennys. If they go I cant collect more.
i think pennies should be band because noboady uses them any more, and they are a hastle too cary around!!!!!
business will round up prices and we will end up paying more than we are now
No one in their right mind would think to get rid of the U.S. penny.
I agree!
I think that the penny should be kept because it is an important part of our history. It is also convinient if you a little bit extra so you don;t have to use up a nickel. Also if you are a cashier sometimes you have to use pennies.
we shuld always have the penny
No, we should get rid of the penny. It has almost no value and probably costs too much to make. It takes up to much space.
Totally! Kepp the penny! How else can you annoy someone while repaying a debt than by payng it all in pennies? (trust me, it REALLY annoys.)
Discontinue making pennies and nickels untill they can pay back China, then continue normally.(The way things are going, this should take only about 56 years.)
pennys are cool
keep the penny and don't lose it. pennies are awesome and we need to keep them alive!! dont let anything happen to wonderful penny made of sweet copper die. make it worth 5 cents and replace the so called nickel, that would then turn into 1 cent. always remember the good say
a penny is a part of history, why not keep them. without a part of the US coins you will recive just more change in return when you're buying something. also to remove penneys would make all the prices that are $.99 or anything like that would have to be rounded up to $1.00 and we would lose money.
keep the penny and don't lose it. pennies are awesome and we need to keep them alive!! dont let anything happen to wonderful penny made of sweet copper die. make it worth 5 cents and replace the so called nickel, that would then turn into 1 cent. always remember the good say
Lincoln already has the 5 dollar bill
how many times in the last week have you used a penny not think about how many that have been made the only thing pennys are good for these days is parking meters and for little kids to pick up and say "find a penny pick it up and all the day youll have good luck"
get rid of the penny
think what shopping would be like without it no more 9.99 stuff
No,If you save all the pennies you recive you can savea lot
lincon has it but he derservers more! the penny is the best out of all coins
i like the noble penny.
pennies can kill if you drop a penny from a tall building it will slice your head open
IS THAT TRUE OR AN EXADREATION?
It is completely false. The mighty Mythbusters tackled this in their first season, and found that air resistance makes the penny tumble, slowing its speed. Video here. Uncle Cecil came to a similar conclusion more than 20 years earlier.
Our drugstore sells assorted Tootsie Rolls for a penny.
i was 4 the penny but after reading this im totally against the penny
There has just been so much inflation that the penny really isn't a significant amount any more. I mean, what's $100 now? Not much.Compare $100 to a penny. Point stated.
