because we are all living in America and that is all that matters. The government uses the information about ethnicity/race for what? That is the bigger question!
A lot of government programs track race, originally as a way of making sure that discrimination does not occur. (You can't tell if a program is integrated if you don't know the races of the people involved.) Some people argue that some of these programs act mostly to benefit one race or another.
The borders of congressional districts are often drawn in such a way as to make sure the residents are predominately of a single race -- a practice which actually hurts minority representation.
i think things should remain the same, but there should also be space for ppl to write in what they consider themselves so that new categories more reflective of current conceptions of race can be made for the next census.
The value of this approach is that a different taxanomic system would need to be invented.
Because racism and institutional racism still affects people in this country and we need to keep track of how it affects people. Through the census we can see distribution of wealth, etc. Although, it is certainly an imperfect way to measure disparity.
In the end we're all human beings. We all have hearts that beat the same, we all have the same blood flowing through our veins.
Yes, we're all similar on the inside, and we are of the same species. But that doesn't mean we treat each other the same! Nor does it mean that we have a reason beyond appearance for treating individuals differently.
I think that people are really boring, so they need race and racism to feel important.
race is important if we are serious about addressing racism.
Census data gives us valuable information about people's lives (occucpation, SES, other demographics), and whether racial differences persist in a country that values basic human rights (health, liberty, etc.)
No matter how different we all are, we are all human beings. We may dress and look different but we cry the same cry and laugh the same laugh.
Race is an important thing, it a way of how people define themselves and a way of how people's relationships grow, it the difference that makes us unique, BUT that shouldn't be the reason why one is lable a certain way!

Why is race so important anyways? It doesn't matter does it? I mean, one day in the far future I'm sure there'll be more and more relationships that are interracial. Their children will be known as "mixed" kids and it won't really matter. *Shrugs* People need to stop making race such a big issue and just accept that we're not all created the same. That's what makes us who we are. =)
it's important to monitor the discrepancies in socio-economic status that linger as a result of the social construct of race.
Race is syupid. We all came from the same place and even if we don't look the same on the outside we are the same on the inside and everyone should be given an equal oppertuinety

I think people should be able to fill in blank. the info. can be useful in getting across the point that mnay people identify with more than one race and in the long run that race isn't useful wy to catagorize people

I think that race should not be a question on the census, because it can be construed as offensive and degrading to some people.
Race should be included in the census as a tool to help recognise the social and economic effects that racism still has in our society. I have seen these effects first hand, having been a census taker in Southern California in 1980 and 1990
I think that everyone has equal rights and we should not judge people by thier looks or race.
Why wouldn't you want to know the demographic of the people taking the census? If you don't ask race, you might as well not ask sex or age either - let alone income or work status

Think about whycensus is condcuted in the first place. One reason is used to justify spending for education and social programs. The real issue is class, and race covers up adressing this inequality. You can maintain unique identity without having to put it on the census. Your identity is in your heart, not the law.
We need identifying questions because like it or not, race has a major impact on people's lives, and the census figures are denominators in rates showing different experiences of different groups. BUT - I think the question should be changed. There should be two questions. 1) "What race do most people think you are?" and the choices are White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Indian. 2) "How do you identify yourself?" open-ended.

People can lie, but it makes it more secure. The US knows what they are doing, maybe you don't!! Why do people have to be so DIFFICULT!!!!!!!!!!
The census, by design, has nothing to do with national security, immigration, or law enforcement. The questions about race on the census are not there for the government to find illegal immigrants, suicide bombers (who, by the way, are notably uncommon in the US), or terrorists.
The architects of the census know that if people fear that answering the questions honestly will land them in trouble with the law, they won't talk to the census takers or fill out the forms. And an accurate snapshot of the US population is important for a lot of different reasons.
So long as individuals and societies continue to treat people differently based on their perceptions about the social construct of race, some information about it can be useful in ensuring that efforts to equalize treatment are adequate. However, current categories are inadequate, so let people define themselves or decline to do so. I hope that ultimately it will become irrelevant.
race is an important part of human identity, and is only has negative condentations when people use differentiations in race to make vital decisions, and hold others back. privilege should be exempt from our society, but unfortunately it is still infused into our governing systems, and even worse, our thought patterns. we each need to look outside of race when considering treatment of others.

People expect some standard questions on this census. It is a good tradition,something our founding folks thought important, as I agree with.
many people are a mixof races/ethnicities/cultures and cannot been defined by one large category ... also many follow a culture such as hispanic when they are only a % of that and wouldotherwise maybe need to check a "white" box.

here's a scenario: two people with exactly the same heritage fill out a census and put in two different answers for race. are they different races biologically? no. however, they view themselves differently and this is what afftects their lives more than their actual biological heritage. race is subjective, but the government SHOULD measure it on the census because it shows people's personal views.
I think they should have a space so people can write what race they are because by having some races lilsted while others are just listed as "others" is VERY discriminating...

We are all Americans but if we are ever going to work to create a place where we are all equal Americans who are treated equally we are going to have to see race and take it into account, not pretend that we don't see it in what we do every day.

We are all Americans, but the option of choosing your race helps to show how diverse the United States is. We are made up of many different races!

Race is real because racism is real.
I believe it should be left the way it is. Try doing Genealogy and looking up a name like "Smith", and the nationality is African American. Just how any people of all nationalities have a common name like that! So it sure helps me track who I am looking for by showing the persons Race.
People need to be proud of their nationality, color and race! And understand that Yes we are different from one another and proud of it!
Yes it should be tracked on the u.s. census bereau with the option to say what race you are. Yes we are all Americans who live here in the united states but we are still different races and ethniticitys. We need to track race so that we make sure that everybody is being treated fairly.
