Babies sleep the most. Old people sleep the least. One theory is that the brain uses sleep to learn, to take all the new impressions acquired during the day and associate them with previous learning. For babies, all impressions are new, and little learning has been accumulated, so the process takes a lot longer.

Gene says:

When I have trouble falling asleep, I use a simple meditation technique. I find a dark, quiet room and get as comfortable as possible -- usually lying flat on my back. I close my eyes and imagine a giant number "1" floating in a black, empty void. Then, as I breathe, I count: "one...one...one..." This has the effect of emptying the brain of distracting thoughts, and relaxing the body so you can drift off.

Some people use a similar technique of self-hypnosis. Again, lying comfortably in a dark, quiet room, slowly relax each part of your body. Starting with the toes, tell yourself "my toes are relaxed...the muscles have let go...the weight drops away..." Repeat that two or three times, then move on to the feet, the ankles, and so on. Again, the monotony of the exercise relaxes botht the body and the brain.

Weird, this must be a somewhat common meditation technique Gene. I was taught a very similar method in junior high by my English teacher (yes, I went to a bit of a unique grade school). But we pictured the big number floating in the middle of a peaceful forest scene and combined it with the body relaxing method.

Or what about snakes?
In the future, it seems like things will be a lot thirstier - I've seen the movies. But what if we aren't thirsty for water? I'm lactose-intolerant. And, if the future were a big party, just with flying cars instead of regular cars, would I even be invited?
How can anyone sleep, with the future so close at hand?

Just doing my best,

I need at least 11 hours of sleep and i hate it. Most people are lucky that they need less and I happen to be one of the unlucky ones. I have always been suffering from having to wake up at 7am to get ready for school and i dont get enough sleep and become depressed and unable to enjoy life. I try to sleep at 10 pm but i cant because im always awake until after midnight. My biological clock seems to be screwed up. School starts too early. The general saying that people need 8 hours of sleep causes us long sleepers to feel left out and struggle with having to get up early in the morning to work. I dont like being different and I wish I was like most people. I hate being depressed...

When I was working I got up at 6 and went to bed at 12. Long commute, 3 kids, lots to do! Once I retired I worried I would be awake at 6 every day! Adapted real quick though -- now get up at 8:30 or so.

I'm a junior in high school and I get so much homework during the week (plus add in procrastination time) that I rarely go to bed before 12:30....and i get up at 6 in the morning. Because of school I have to get up way too early in the morning on school days and go to bed way too late. I positively hate schoolwork; it gives me no time to have a life!
About the sleeping more than 10 hours, I sleep 12+ hours on weekends. All the tiredness during the week makes it so I have to use weekends to catch up on sleep!

Turns out that both too little sleep and too much sleep are bad for you.

To quote the Bare Naked Ladies:

"Who needs sleep?
Well you're never gonna get it
Who needs sleep?
Tell me what's that for?
Who needs sleep?
Be happy with what you're gettin'
There's a guy who's been awake
Since the Second World War."

I don't know about people whe get ten hours of sleep every night, but I switch between 3 to 5 hours and then randomly some nights I fall asleep and wake up 10 to 11 hours later. It all depends. During school, I sleep 9 or more hourson weekedns and far less on weekdays...

I totaly agree. Schools need to give us more time to sleep. My brain doesnt wake up untill about 10, so my morning class grades suffer at no fault of mine. Schools need to consider kids' needs.

The job of schools is to provide students with what they need to be productive adult members of society. Part of that is learning how to be awake, alert and functioning by 7 am. You're not going to have much luck holding down a job if school coddles you and reinforces your bad habits.

And keep off my lawn.

Um...I like to think that I'm occasionally a productive adult member of society. (OK, not very adult, but...) I wasn't ever an awake, alert, and functioning person by 7am until after I became a parent. Other members of my household might argue that I wasn't functional in the morning even then. The day my kids could get their own breakfast was a great day. My point is that there are plenty of jobs for which early rising is a must. There are also plenty for which your work hours are less important. And there is no way I would have learned something like, say, calculus if I'd had to take the class at 7am.

Calculus starts at 8:45 (or, at least, asymptotically approaches that point). 7:00 is when you need to get up in order to have breakfast, get dressed and catch the bus.

since i babysit and then work and then braid hair and cook and clean etc..then that pretty much narrows down my sleep hours to about 5 hours a night and probably one hour during the day

I'm 15, and I usually 3-4 hours a night on the weekdays. I usually get more on the weekends because I can sleep in late.
But I just can't fall asleep before 3AM. No matter how much I try, I won't and can't fall asleep till around 3.
But I'm the most energetic, hyperactive (no I'm not ADHD), person you'll meet. I play a lot of sport, and I use to do gymnastics.
But I still only live on about 3-4 hours sleep, I don't usually feel the effects of it during the day.
Is something wrong with me?
