Genome sequencing would help doctors determine possible diseases that are passed along genetically. That, in addition to knowledge of your family history, could help a doctor determine how to diagnos and treat someone.

Genome sequencing would allow early screening and treatment for people who are predispositioned to have certain conditions or diseases that are genetic, such as breast cancer. Those that may be at risk for breast cancer can be tested for the BRCA gene and, depending on the results, either be screened more often or take measures to prevent breast and ovarian cancer.

Laurie says:

Knowing some of your DNA sequence can be really helpful if you know what to do with the information. But there are so many mutuations that we still don't understand. And even if we know what the mutation means you can't always do something about it.

James Watson just had his whole genome sequenced. It took four months and $1.5 million. But experts think his was the first of a new generation of sequencing genomes. It is thought that it will now cost about $1 million and only take two months. Click here for the Nature News report on this topic. Dr. Watson had a counseling session with many experts and they still didn't know what to tell him about the 20 disease related mutations found in his genome. From the Nature News report:

[Michael Egholm, vicepresident of research and development at 454] was part of a counseling session advising Watson on the meaning of the 20 mutations in his sequence that are reported to be associated with increased disease risk. “It was so profound, how little we were actually able to say [to him] about that,” he says. “To me, it really proved that this is the beginning [of this field of research], not the end.”

So before you thinking about any DNA sequencing, from a whole genome to part of a single gene to non-coding regions of your DNA, make sure you talk to an expert in the field!

Most health insurance excludes "pre-existing conditions" at least for a year. If our dna profile becomes generally known it would greatly increase the number pre-exting conditions that could be identifed. Many are very expensive to treat so it could be very much a disadvantage for most of us.
