The same reason a geologist would go anywhere -- to study the world, to learn more about the Earth, to see if Antarctica is any different from other places. Plus, Antarctica has been explored far less than other, more accessible continents -- the odds of finding something new are much greater.

The Science Museum of Minnesota runs an Object Identification Program that might be able to help you, Abby.

Museum staff can identify items within their areas of expertise: anthropology, biology, and paleontology.

Bring your object in, and be prepared to leave it with us for a few weeks. (You can get an Object ID program pass at the box office so you can bring your object down to Collectors' Corner, on the 4th floor, without paying admission.) You'll get a call in 2-6 weeks, after an expert has looked at your object and determined what it is. And then you can come and pick it up.
