Woman's shawl
Zinacantan, Chiapas, Mexico
This woman's shawl from Zinacantan, Chiapas, Mexico was collected by the Cordry Intern in Mexican Folk Art in 1994. The base of this shawl is woven with cotton and metallic thread using a backstrap loom and the embroidery is hand sewn using acrylic thread. The Science Museum has been collecting textiles in the highland villages of Chiapas since 1976 in order to document changes in design, as each design is specific to a certain village. A current research project is focusing on the textiles in the municipality of Zinacantan.
