You can start your safari a mere one block east of the Museum! The Ramsey County West Building is covered with Morton gneiss (pronounced "nice"). At 3.6 billion years old, this is some of the oldest rock in the world!

WOW! ITS SO COOL THAT DINORSOURS LIVED SO LONG AGO AND IF I DO SAY SO MYSELF THE T-REX IS THE COOLEST!
i think that all of these petrified animal/dinosaur bones are pretty tight. i think that the place could be a little less dark, though. otherwise, this place is awesome. my favorite is probably the big armadillo type thing. i also like the air and the ping pong balls in the cafetiria, but the mac and cheeese could use some variety, because i always keep tasting the same cheese! but it was still good.
this was awesome....i agree with "a learning kid" about the petrified animal/dinosaur bones
I like rocks. I even have rose stone. It is this pretty pink color. It is my favorite. But mind you I would like to find a dinosaur bone or fossil.
I've been looking to have monument (gravestone) made of Fordham Gneiss, a grayish ortho- and paragneiss of graywacke origin, the archetypical bedrock in my native New York, especially the Bronx, where I grew up.
Fordham University's older buildings were constructed of Fordham Gneiss uncovered during subway construction, but that source and local quarries are no longer available. They faced their newest buildings with a Grenville Gneiss from upstate NY sold as "Corinthian Granite", but that is not available in a monument quality.
After a long search my monument dealer pointed me to commercially available "Rainbow Granite" whose pink somewhat matches the pink granites from New England and Canada favored here in Massachusetts, and whose foliations are reminiscent of the Fordham Gneiss. With a little research, the dealer told me that this stone is in fact Morton Gneiss from your state.
I'm glad I'll be able to have the attractive and meaningful monument made from your stone.
this is so cool where did you find it let us know!

its like the cereal!
i guess that it is cool, but in wisconsin, we have things like that all over. especially in the chippewa valley. one of our highways is built right through a rock. sandstone i think?? but it is still pretty old compared to other things around there. people are predicting that it will soon collapes. pieces of sandstone are actually breaking off, and the erosion is starting to kick in:) i guess that minnesota needs to keep it's natural history.
thank you for sharing things like that! :)
this is pretty cool considering how long it has been around
wow this is soCool and its very educational!!!!!!
