It is something that can help everyone begin to understand more about their body and its make up to better our health as a society. Those that don't appreciate this are ones that need to maybe look at it as more of a learning experience to better their own lives.

Liza says:

In the first 34 days of the exhibit, more than 100,000 visitors saw BODY WORLDS. (This happened faster here than at any other venue that has hosted a BODY WORLDS exhibit except for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, which opened the exhibit to coincide with schools' spring break.)

To accommodate the number of people who want to see the exhibit, we're expanding our hours; we'll be open from 9am to 10pm every day. (Last admission to the BODY WORLDS exhibit is at 8:30pm.)

Also, the exhibit will change throughout its run. Today, we're expanding the prenatal area (which has generated lots of visitor comments, both positive and negative) with four new specimens showing abnormal fetal development. And we expect a few new full-body plastinates in the next few weeks.

The body worlds exibit was ok in my opinion. It would have been better though, in my opinion. If it had been a little brighter in there I probebly would have stayed in the exibit longer. Also if there had been more information on each part, mabey some information on how they help the body work, and such then I would have learned more. From my stand point, the *musium* is for learning, not just showing. If there had also been a more interactive part to each part of the exibit it would draw more people in. You do want money, right? Well make it more family orentated by interactive items. I am impressed by the items ,though,it raises question on the where-abouts that you got the parts. But over all I think that it was displayed well, people could see everything, within time. it was set up well, in order and such. You could see things clearly. It was easy to find the exibit, if you knew the *musium* well enough. I think this exibit was well advertized, as you have sold out.. right? next time there is another exibit, it may be nice to get a email, if you may. my father and mother are parts of the *musium* members. * * = spelling mabey wrong

If you are not too shy, one excellent way to get interactivity is to ask museum staff and volunteers questions. They have often researched about the exhibit and love to share what they have learned. One reason I volunteer at at the Collector's Corner is to show and talk about the cool crystals and minerals we have. Some visiters will "interact" for over an hour. When people talk with us it often makes our day.

i'd just like to say that if you wanted the Body Worlds exhibit to be more interactive or family oriented, you could have purchased headphones that would provide you with audio commentary about all of the different exhibits shown. You wouldn't have given yourself a migrane by doing all that tedious reading. Also, you don't have to raise any questions about where they got the parts. They've made it very clear that the bodies were willingly donated, so you don't need to worry about any lawsuits that might pop up. Oh, and it's Museum, not musium. People don't need to come to the exhibit if they are just going to be pessimistic about it.

The specimens in the Body Worlds exhibition come from the Institute for Plastination's body donation program. These generous individuals bequeathed that, upon their death, their bodies could be used for educational purposes in the exhibition. According to the press materials from Body Worlds, the majority of the whole-body plastinates are male due to the fact that male bodies generally endure the process of plastination better than female bodies. In addition, more males have donated their bodies since the program started. However, most of the organs used in the exhibition are actually from female donors.

I think the exhibit was done very well over all. Particularly interesting was the pregnancy/fetus/infants exhibit. In future Body Worlds Gunther may want to expound on the functioning of the brain as it relates to the functioning of the body. Particularly, what areas of the brain are responsible for controlling heart and breath rate? What area of the brain is responsible for
coordination? What hemisphere of the brain controls spatial/linear thinking? Or verbal/linguistic thinking? If possible a cross section exhibit featuring the brain similar to the cross section exhibits of the various organs and muscular systems of the body would also be helpful and interesting. Thank you.

I thought that Body Worlds was a place of Science, a place of learning about different kinds of things that bodies can do, and I really thought that (now that I have seen this place) learning about our bodies are intersting. I really enjoyed being here and seeing all of the things our bodies can do.

I thought that the exhibit was GREAT! Because now we get a chance to view it without having people just explain what the body does and looks like, a first had experience is better and more memorable than anything else. So i think that it was a success.

I thought it was a fascinating, educational experience. Few people ever stop to think about what lies underneath their skin; what keeps them breathing, moving, and thinking. It's amazing to actually see how complex and fragile we are. It's a unique, rare exhibit, that you should go see if you haven't already.

I like the fetal development room best. I found the stages of development and the pregnant woman to be very powerful to me in my current situation as a brand new dad. It's amazing how everything in a woman's body is able to make room for a baby! And to see how a baby grows was great as well.

This is PROOF that a baby is a baby from the earliest stages. Therefore, abortion is homicide. It's the killing of an innocent human being. You can tell from the exhibit. That was the best part.

Since this (Science Buzz as part of the Science Museum of Minnesota) is an institution of science I feel compelled to address your use of the word proof. For a scientist proof would be based on empirical evidence (the results of multiple tests and experiments). Scientists rarely claim to have proven anything. They do forward well supported theories based on supporting evidence and many disproven hypothesis.

Visually observing the fetuses is not enough to determine whether a "baby is a baby". This distinction is more of a social definition rather than a scientific one. I don't mean to enter into a debate about the social issues of abortion because this isn't really the appropriate forum for this issue. Yet I do feel compelled to comment on your use of the word proof in a scientific context.

This does not prove that abortion is homicide, there is many different views and understandings of what is considered murder.

A baby being a baby doesn't proove anything, because it doesn't proove whether or not the baby has a soul. Anyway, this is an extremely controversial topic that upsets a lot of people, so it's not a good idea to write about it here.

Pretty incredible stuff. The most interesting part of the exhibit was the "fetal development" section. It makes me approach my views on abortion from a different viewpoint after seeing the embryos in the early stages. Very interesting exhibit and highly recommended.

Wow! What a trip. I found the pregnant woman exhibit in very good taste. I was afraid it was going to be scaryand offensive, but judging by the comments of those standing in proximity to myself, I guess I wasn't the only one who thought so. One thing that was really cool was the fact that I happened to be standing next to a couple of different boyfriend/girlfriend appearing couples near the time line for the embryos....the reaction from the young men was neat, as in they had no conscious idea about babies/developement at those stages. I heard alot of "wow, you can see their fingers, etc...'even after all the PSA'a telling the public that babies are alive at conception...I am not pro..anything, but it was nice to see young people learning.

I've always wanted to do a "Freakshow" exhibit. Not some mean-spirited stare-at-the-conjoined-twins kind of throwback deal, but an exhibit about self-made "freaks" of the Pete Rose Circus variety. It won't happen; I only bring it up because the idea seems to spark some of the same emotions, good or bad, that the BODY WORLDS exhibit does. Probably because, in the end, both are exhibits about the human body?

I think there are four stages that visitors to the exhibit go through. (Look around: you can almost see them on people's faces.) The first one is kind of a knee-jerk, visceral reaction. It can be positive or negative--"cool," "revolting," "beautiful," etc. The second is a sense of amazement, which I think happens no matter how you feel about the exhibit. After all, human bodies are amazing. The third is a sense of wonderment: "Why would someone do this?" And the last is a sort of scientific curiosity: "HOW did you DO that?"

What do you think?

This is such a cool exhibit. I like the body work or what ever it is called. Its a little bit wrong folr little kids to see the body parts of the adult but its ok because sooner or later they will have to learn it anyways, so the sooner the better. Gotta dip. Bye-bye!!

Isn't it wrong for you guys to put the body parts up for people to see? I mean, its ok for adult but little kids, its not right. And by the way, isn't exposing other peoples body like killing them and showing it to others. If I was the one who is exposed and torture, then I wouldn't like it. Just try to put them in your shoe for once.

I'm not sure what "body parts" you're referring to--the dissected bodies themselves? the individual organs? reproductive organs, individual or as parts of the plastinates?--but I'll take a stab at answering your questions.

The "Families" section of SMM's BODY WORLDS website contains the following information:

"The exhibition is open to visitors of all ages. Like other museums that have hosted BODY WORLDS, we recommend that a parent or adult accompany children under 13, but there is no age requirement. Parents should know that some displays, such as an area on reproduction and fetal development, are located in a separate room that can be bypassed if it is not appropriate; however, many of the plastinates do have visible genitals."

We also recommend that parents and teachers prepare children for what they'll see in the exhibit by talking to them about it ahead of time, explaining what they'll see and what the purpose is.

As for your second question, no, I don't think that showing the plastinates or the individual specimens is in any way like "killing people and showing them to others", or like "torture." You know the disclaimer you see at the end of movies that says something like, "No animals were harmed in the making of this film"? Well, no people were harmed in the making of this exhibit. Every donor signed a lengthy consent form that explained exactly what would happen to his or her body after death. And the donors' families also agreed to the donation.

Not liking the display of the bodies is a perfectly legitimate reaction; I don't mean to minimize that at all. (If you want to read more perspectives on this, surf over to "Scientist on the Spot." We're featuring four different experts over the run of the exhibit, each with a different perspective on organ/body donation and the ethics of the show and related topics. We've featured Paul Wojda, Catholic theologian, for about a month, and we're just about to replace him with May Yeu Heu, Hmong physician.)

But these people CHOSE to be part of the exhibit, and we should respect their choices just as we should respect yours.

As with any public event, parents are responsible for researching content and exercising their own judgment about what is appropriate for their children to view. I think this exhibit represents an excellent opportunity to broach topics that otherwise mightn't be discussed, and for children to explore science in a very personal way. The SMofM has been very responsible about notifying visitors about the content of the exhibit.

In the case of the pregnant women who died and were plastinated along with their unborn children, one wonders if these children would have given consent to be plastinated and if these children were at an age of viability where they could have been delivered as premies and survived as people rather than objects of "art"?

There was a blanket statement saying that the unborn baby was NOT viable outside the womb. I think people should read what they are viewing instead of staring at it and coming to ridiculous and false conclusions. I also find it abhorrant that people are making this exhibit all about pro-life and pro-choice decisions. Just because a fetus looks like a human at 8 or 10 weeks does not mean that it can function outside the womb as a viable person. Hell, we can't even make our own decisions until we are two years old! Get over your propoganda and appreciate this exhibit for what it is - a way to educate ourselves about how the body works. It an honor and a privilege to be given the opportunity to view something so remarkable and unique.
