The chicken and egg question is asked frequently. The answer depends on your religious/ spirtual believes. If you are a creationist, then the chicken came first. If you are an evolutionarist, then the egg came first.
There are several good online articles that address this issue:

It takes 24-26 hours for a hen to produce an egg. Some hens will produce an egg a day for a long period of time. Others will have shorter 'clutches of eggs.' Birds have only one ovary and oviduct so can't produce more than an egg a day. Sometimes it may look like a hen has laid two eggs in one day, but this is typically because of inconsistent egg collection times - she laid her first egg after your daily collection and laid the second egg before the next collection period.
A chicken has the capability to lay only one egg in every 24-26 hours. That is how long it is to "grow" one in their body. I have heard people "claim" that bantams, a type if chicken that is smaller but just like its standard counterpart, can lay more than one egg a day but the eggs are about 1/3 the size.
We have a "Super Chicken"! One of our hens definitely laid 2 eggs in less than a 24 hour period.
We have only 2 Cochins. We know exactly which is laying which eggs and approximately when. We collect We check the nests mulitiple times a day. Each hen's eggs look different. There were no eggs in the nests last night. But there was one waiting for us from "Pecky Omlette" when we went out this morning to check. Then I saw her lay a 2nd egg 4:30 this afternoon. (When know it wasn't the other chicken's egg (Miss Chicken). Miss Chicken laid and egg yesterday afternoon and today.

Gemma, the answer on your question depends on alot of factors. If the egg had not been fertilised, there is no chance of it ever hatching into a chick.
If the egg had been fertilised, it would depend entirely on how long the egg had been refrigerated, and if it had been kept at a reasonable temperature (usually around 55F).
So, in my opinion, I would say there is little or no chance of the egg ever hatching - also considering that it was bought in a super market.
how many eggs can a hen have per day
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? You be the judge!
