Students VS Teachers! Which is more Valuable?

Have you Ever had a Teacher that told you “I’m Not Here to Be your Friend, I’m Here to Teach” ?

Here Are some Students Opinion.

Student 1

I’ve been told this by this one teacher today in class.
I think that it’s just wrong for a teacher to say that because a teacher is suppose to help me succeed but a teacher with this attitude makes me not wanna be around them or learn! So i failed the class. My teacher negative attitude prevented me to want to learn and gain knowledge. with the mind set about this teacher made me feel there was never be that student teacher relationship that was needed for me to succeed .

Student 2

No, I haven’t experience this problem before. I always had a teacher that cared, and that was there for me when i needed stuff to be done. When I had problems, i would go for advice or go talk to them and they would help me.

Student 3

No, I haven’t really experience this problem either, because my teachers would help me if needed. Some teachers are different in there own ways. Some teachers you will feel comfortable around but then some not. I’m comfortable around the teachers that really want me to succeed and learn to get good grades, but then some other teachers just don’t really care about the student.

This year the Saint Paul Public School District has changed the school year system from semesters to quarters. Some students have difficulties adjusting to this change and some actually like it this way. Some positive things about this change are that, you get more electives, so it’s really good for seniors who are behind in credits, and to have the chance to try new quarter classes that you couldn’t before.The negative thing about this are teachers are rushed in lesson plans, plus credit requirements are higher this year and students are also rushed in school work assignments. So we need your opinion in the following poll to determine whether quarters are best or semesters.

On Monday, December 3, the Science Museum's Science House officially opened its doors as a resource center for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) educators around the state.

Check out Science House!: Science House is not only a cool new resource for teachers, but it's also a zero-emissions, environmental demonstration building.

Science House is a place where educators can check out classroom sets of hands-on materials for their students, engage in formal and informal consultation and professional development, and discuss education issues with friends and colleagues in a comfortable and creative environment.

Membership is available to districts for an annual fee. Any teacher within that district may make unlimited use of Science House during the school year. Colleges and universities can also become members.

Members of Science House can:

• Borrow a complete set of skulls for comparative anatomy inquiry lessons with students;
• Talk with a geologist, biologist, chemist, engineer, or mathematician about concepts that are interesting or confusing;
• Try out a telescope, then borrow it for a student camping trip;
• Learn about Minnesota's Academic Standards in Science and Mathematics align with national documents by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and the National Research Council;
• Meet a colleague from another school or district to review a lesson plan;
• Enjoy a hot cup of coffee while grading papers;
• Consult with a professional development specialist about how to integrate more mathematics into an upcoming science unit;
• Take advantage of lab space, wireless access, and professional consultation to design lessons and meet potential partners, and much more.

Science House is open:

• Monday - Thursday: 3:30 - 6:30 pm
• Friday: 3:30 - 6 pm
• Saturday - Sunday: Closed

(Please note: Science House will be closed December 24 - January 1 for holiday break.)

Barbara MorganAstronaut Barbara Morgan is also a teacher. Several educational sessions are scheduled for the STS-118 mission.

Students from Challenger Learning Centers interact with Astronauts on Wednesday August 15th at 11am and 3pm; Shuttle Downlink with astronauts Barbara Morgan and Rick Mastracchio on Thursday August 16.(more info)

I am watching Barbara Morgan live on the NASA TV as she uses the shuttle's arm to install the external stowage platform. Yesterday a new gyroscope was installed. To follow activities I recommend these links:

Shannon Babb: Shannon Babb, winner of the 2006 Intel Science Talent Search.

Shannon Babb, 18, of Highland, Utah, has won the top prize in the 2006 Intel Science Talent Search. This annual competition awards scholarships to American high school students who complete outstanding scinece projects. Babb's project studied the effects of human and animal behavior in a river drainage system, and made recommendations for reducing pollution and runoff. She has been awarded a $100,000 scholarship.

A total of 30 students won scholarship prizes,totalling over half a million dollars. A list of the other winning projects is here.
