Dr. Susan Hockfield, named President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology last year, told The New York Times that she is

...Profoundly worried about . . . a "disrespect" for the wonders of math, science, engineering and technology. "As a nation we have ceased to be inspired by these things," she said.

What do YOU think? Is she right? Are Americans falling behind in math, science, engineering, and technology? If we are, what will that mean for our society?

I am not sure if Americans are "falling behind" in that we train and employ scientifically literate students and workers from other areas of the world...so, as a country, the United States still tries to "get what it needs"...just not as much from its own citizens.

It does seem sad that richer nations can "contract out" for these skills, as we in the US live with technology and expect first class ammenities and services with science behind them...

I also wonder if Americans "disrespect" science or are more intimidated by it...

yes i believe that americans are falling behind because we are sending more and more jobs overseas. More engineer and scientist jobs are being given to people in Asia. If we go to war with those people we have lost most of our jobs and manpower. We need to keep more jobs in America. The number of scientists and engineers graduating from college have decreased lots in past years.
