Sunlight prevents cancer

Sunlight helps the body produce vitamin D, which seems to prevent some cancers: Photo by sooz from flickr.com.
For years, doctors have advised people to limit their time in the sun. Prolonged exposure to sunlight – specifically, the UV rays in sunlight – damages skin and can lead to premature aging and skin cancer.
But now, a new report claims that lack of sunlight can lead to cancer, too. A study found that people with low levels of vitamin D have higher rates of cancer. And the body produces vitamin D naturally when skin is exposed to sunlight.
So, going out and getting some sun may actually prevent more cases of cancer than it causes.

"a new report" ???
look back to 1950, the doctors already know by then..... who coverd up?
look back to 1980, the honest doctors were warning everyone almost
to NOT USE SUNBLOCK (almost 20% increase cancr)
but who listened?
look up, if you can find, the most successful health giver last century -
his name is Carey Reams. He was treated just like Jesus. (crucified, in the media , by the authorities) because he only charged , what, 300 to cure disease? (instead of 100,000).... His record is unsurpassed, no one today in public even comes close to his success.
Jesus was crucified in the media?
Well, it figures. You get in a couple of temple brawls, and the town cryers just have a field day with you.
Please post them. We really encourage all Buzzers to cite their sources. Thanks.
One down; 9,999 to go.
I didn't see anything on the site about government suppression of vitamin D findings, though I admit I did not read every word.
I did see that Adele Davis wrote several books, which went through several printings. This rather argues against any conspiracy to suppress.
I also found this quote: " One cannot argue with science except scientifically ~ the people who try to assail Adelle Davis with emotional slurs can't touch the science she reported on." Respect for scientific findings and the scientific method are the hallmarks of reasoned debate.
Oh, boy. Adelle Davis.
Well, Buzzers might be interested to know that Quackwatch Consumer Education has a whole page devoted to Adelle Davis and her bad advice.
"Adelle Davis (1904-1974) was the first "health authority" among modern food faddists who had any formal professional background. She was trained in dietetics and nutrition at the University of California at Berkeley, and got an M.S. degree in biochemistry from the University of Southern California in 1938. Despite this training, she promoted hundreds of nutritional tidbits and theories that were unfounded. At the 1969 White House Conference on Food and Nutrition, the panel on deception and misinformation agreed that Davis was probably the most damaging source of false nutrition information in the nation."
I wouldn't wish cancer on anyway, but Davis's death smacks of irony:
"Adelle Davis used to say that she never saw anyone get cancer who drank a quart of milk daily, as she did. She stopped saying that when she died of cancer in 1974, leaving behind her a trail of ten million books and a following that was large, devoted, and misinformed.
Hello to all!
I looked into Adele Davis's diet plan, and it is not as great as one might think. She recommended lots of supplements, but research shows supplements are not as good as previously thought, research showing an increase in prostate cancer when Vit. A is taken supplementally versus eating foods rich in Vit.A, which shows decrease in prostate cancer. She recommended whole wheat, but wheat as well as beans have an enzyme inhibitor that must be removed by sprouting wheat first, or soaking beans overnight then discarding water before cooking. Two of many examples. Still she was in the right ballpark, whereas quackwatch is suspiciously slanted towards the medical field of America, which is close-minded towards natural remedies. Example: the Cancer Institute of America recently admitted that diet can play an important role in prevention (not curing, by the way) of many cancers. quackwatch uses the same tired arguments towards raw milk, which if obtained from a reputable dairy that tests regularly, is safe and, unlike denatured (pasteurized) milk, has available enzymes, plus is reported to have more available calcium and other nutrients that apparently pasteurization "locks up" (Weston B Price Org) Quackwatch's arguments about raw milk include one saying that you can get tuberculosis fron raw milk. Yet they refer to cow tuberculosis which is entirely different. Still, quackwatch does have good info in there...
Bottom line: Too much finger pointing, folks. We may all die of cancer tommorow, but try to be happy today. I do not read many happy posts in here! Have a great day
The Toronto Globe and Mail recently had an article on vitamin D. The Canadian Cancer Society recently recommended its citizens increase their vitamin D intake. The American Cancer Society has not yet taken that step, as it feels more evidence is needed.
The article is behind a subscription wall, but a free version can be found here.
How can that happen by sunlight preventing cancer?
Your body uses sunlight to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D helps prevent some forms of cancer.
Hello to all!
To reply about sunlight preventing cancer, here's my take on it:
All the societies around the Earth that consistently show lowest cancer rates (Rural Japanese, India, to cite examples) have varied diets high in vitamins and minerals, as well as enzymes (thus the mention of raw milk in my previous post). And they do not use sun block. It seems this way of eating simply gives the body a very complete nutritional profile in which to fight cancer and other diseases. Vitamin D from sunlight seems to play an important role in cancer because of how it helps the body make this nutritional profile complete. So there is something we are missing, here. Interestingly enough, those societies I mentioned have problems with bacteria and infections/infectious disease. Combined with Modern Medicine's miraculous abilities to combat bacteria (for now) we are very, very fortunate people.

Here's some advice on how to make sure you're getting enough vitamin D.
And here’s a report on the numerous benefits of vitamin D, beyond just fighting cancer.
