High Bridge power plant smokestack: Things are gonna be different around here...
Courtesy tboardAt 7:30 on Saturday morning, the 570-foot-tall, 5770-ton smokestack of the High Bridge power plant will come crashing down. Xcel Energy’s new gas-fired plant is complete, and the old coal-burning plant, built in 1923, is being torn down. If you want to watch, try the bluff across the river. (Traffic will be stopped on the High Bridge, Randolph Avenue, and Shepard Road.) And be on time: the stack is expected to fall in about 10 seconds. Even the dust cloud should dissipate quickly.
More info from the Star Tribune and the Pioneer Press.

Driving by on W. 7th Sunday a.m., I couldn't believe how different the landscape seems without the smokestack. It really surprised me!
I would say that was about the best thing I've ever done at 7:30 am. I watched from the Smith ave highbridge, and there were loud noises, 570 feet of falling concrete, surprised birds, dust, people acting frightened of dust—all in all pretty fun.
Like everyone else in town, I got some decent pictures of the tower on its way down. I'll post some here if I remember to grab my camera tomorrow.
We got some great video of the collapse and will be posting it later today. It's pretty great to watch the giant column come falling down.
I didn't even know that they have that kind of pictures with the sky looking like that. Wow the picture look really nice and it look creepy like something going to happen to the place.
