Waking up: Chilean volcano thought to be dormant erupts for the first time in 9,000 years
![]()
Ash and lightning: The phenomenon of volcanic activity triggering lightning was seen this week at the eruption of the Chaiten Volcano in Chile.
Courtesy guanoThe residents of the small coastal Chilean village of Chaiten got a huge suprise over the weekend: a long dormant volcano suddenly erupted, forcing 4,500 residents to suddenly evacuate the town in early winter conditions. Be sure to click through all the photos in the link's slide show. The views are spectacular. Here is a slide show from National Geographic. And here is a video report of the eruption. So far, one person has been found dead at the eruption site, but the volcano continues to spew ash into the sky. Because the volcano was thought to be dormant, it hasn't been monitored for underground activity like many other volcanoes across the globe.

Thats sad, isn't there a way for people to know if the volcano is going to erupt. hmm... hope every thing is okay
Geologists keep their eyes and ears (and technical equipment) watching active volcanoes. The problem with Chiaten was that it was considered dormant since it hadn't erupted in 9,000 years and the experts have not been monitoring it.
whew i'm so glad that i don't live near by a Vocanol. And that must be scary when the erupted happen
id love to see an explosion of a volcano. that would be ssssssooo ssssweet!!

Dang... I hate lightning but I'm not terrified by them though... I just hate it when it kills all of the lights in our house...
U Kno Wat Im Sayin!!!
Here's a link to some more impressive photos of the damage that thick coats of ash have done to farms in south Chile after the eruption of the volcano. Animals on the farms have been abandoned due to danger from the ongoing eruptions.
New rumblings from the volcano have geologists worried...
