Funny, I heard one of the researchers from this study talking this weekend about this work on the radio. She said specifically that they did NOT see a correlation in these numbers and internet usage.

She said that the majority of the correlations have to do with geography and socioeconomic issues. The people at the bottom of our society are less networked and more likely to be on their own in times of trouble. The upper midwest ranked quite high in the study compared to the rest of the nation. People in states like Minnesota have a larger circle or friends and report deeper connections and ability to talk with them about problems.
