Lighting prize announced

The US Department of Energy has created a competition, called the L Prize, for designing new, high-efficiency lighting to replace the common light bulb. The competition will award up to $20 million in prizes.

how come the department of energy cant think of their own idea on how to get a new light bulb? instead of paying for someone elses idea.

The Dept. of Energy is a political office that sets and enforces policy. It is not a research lab. They do fund research labs and projects.
