Toll from China quake estimated at 3,000 to 5,000
A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck central China, but sent thousands of people rushing out of buildings and into the streets hundreds of miles away in Beijing and Shanghai.
The powerful earthquake trapped nearly 900 students in central China on Monday after their school collapsed and at least 107 people were killed across several provinces, state media reported.Yahoo News

Death toll in China earthquake rises to 8,533
Holy cow: this CNN post says that the earthquake in China affected over half the country's provinces. China is BIG. That's one heck of a quake!
Also according to the article:
" An earthquake with 7.5 magnitude in the northern Chinese city of Tangshan killed 255,000 people in 1976 -- the greatest death toll from an earthquake in the last four centuries and the second greatest in recorded history, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Tangshan is roughly 1,600 km from Chengdu, the nearest major city to the epicenter of Monday's quake."
I've heard, too, that it was felt in Vietnam, Laos and Pakistan as well.
Here's the US Geological Survey earthquake page, with info on the world's most recent seismic activity. And here's specific data on the Sichuan quake. (Click the tabs at the top to see maps, an explanation, etc.)
I especially liked this page which shows a map illustrating shaking density and population sizes that were effected by the Sichuan earthquake.
US intelligence analysts are looking at spy satellite images of the quake area. According to Reuters,
"[A defense department official] said the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, or NGA, was assessing high-altitude imagery as a routine step taken whenever a natural disaster or another major event occurs someplace in the world.
U.S. spy satellites and other high-altitude surveillance platforms can produce highly detailed pictures of damage to roads, railways, tunnels, ports and coastlines."
The USGS has upgraded the quake magnitude from 7.8 to 7.9.
Over 50,000 dead, missing or buried in China quake. Yahoo News
Over 50000 dead thats outrageous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The misery continues in the Sichuan province of China.
The death toll continues to rise, and authorities are warning that dams and hydropower stations have been damaged and could give way at any time.
There have been survival stories:
"Amid the overwhelming gloom, there were also moments of joy.
In Mianzhu, where thousands have already been confirmed dead, about 500 people were pulled out alive from crushed buildings.
Rescuers in Hanwang, a village in Mianzhu, sustained a girl with food and water as they struggled to free her from the ruins of a school.
A woman eight-months pregnant and her mother, trapped under an apartment building in Dujiangyan, were freed by firefighters.
'We are very happy. We have been standing here shouting for two days,' said Pan Jianjun, a relative. 'But there are still three more people in there making sounds.'"
But the Reuters article goes on to say that one-third of houses have been destroyed, and 90% have been damaged.
The problem isn't necessarily a lack of money or technology. Many times, it's a lack of information. Building safer schools doesn't mean building them so they never collapse, but building them so they collapse in a survivable way--with big spaces between elements so the voids can shelter survivors and be accessed by rescuers.
You can watch videos of the earthquake on CNN's iReport.
It's so sad poor people because they pass to this cathastrophy the number of people die increase day to day and the most incredible is the size of the earthquake cover all China.
A large aftershock earthquake, the strongest of more than 8,000 aftershocks detected since the quake on May 12, destroyed more than 70,000 homes and left 200,000 others in danger of collapse today. The US Geological Survey put the magnitude of Sunday's aftershock at 5.8. Yahoo News
I can't believe this happened to the great China, it is sooo sad hear about the because most of them loss their homes, families and friends.
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake rattled the same area of Sichuan, China, this morning.
I think that a very old tectonic plate is under china and is finnaly getting enough pressure to create earth qukes.
