Malagasy Taxon B

Malagasy Taxon B
Berivotra Madagascar
on loan from Université d’Antananarivo, Madagascar

This is one of the tail bones from a newly discovered long-necked dinosaur from Madagascar. The dinosaur is so brand new that it hasn’t even been named yet, and is known so far from only a few vertebrae like this one, and a part of the shoulder. It is a member of the group of dinosaurs known as “titanosaurs,” which survived until the end of the age of dinosaurs, 65 million years ago.

Curator’s pick

I chose this bone because it is one of the best examples of where our paleontology program, and my own research, are headed into the future. Paleontology has been a hallmark of the museum since it’s very beginning 100 years ago, and we’re still going strong, making important discoveries, asking big questions, and taking our research to an international scale.
