Textile
Peru, Andean Highlands, around 1920-1970
Cotton, wool, dye
SMM A2005:17:13
Andean weavers use portable backstrap looms to make textiles like this one. The designs and style of this piece reflect a deep tradition that extends back to the Inca Empire. The patterns represent birds, mountains, valleys and ponds from the Cusco, Peru region.
Curator's pickThis textile is one of the first objects I accepted into The Science Museum of Minnesota’s collections. To further its personal relevance, it was researched and catalogued by the first high school student I mentored through Mentor Connection. For me, part of working in the museum profession involves encouraging youth to explore museum careers, and I’m always happy to hear former interns and students following that path.
