![]() Sculpture Ocumicho, Michoacan, Mexico, 1980 Ceramic SMM A80:13:2 This surrealist sculpture is part of a Mexican Folk art movement known as Arte Fantastico. It is one piece in SMM’s extensive Mexican Folk Art collection, mainly consisting of donations by Donald and Dorothy Cordry in the 1980s. The Cordrys set up an internship endowment, allowing SMM to employ a Minnesota student who travels to Latin America and collects for the museum while also receiving museum studies mentorship. Curator's pickThis sculpture is a compelling and dynamic piece. I like it because it blends pre-Columbian traditions of pottery production and day of the dead celebrations with a contemporary flare. I also think it’s exciting to look at and wonder where the bus is headed! |
