Mask

Mask

Lega, Zaire, Africa, around 1900-1960

Wood, raffia

A86:16:12

The Lega people of Zaire have a complex social system called Bwami. Bwami members use masks like this one during instruction ceremonies, where initiates advance to higher ranks. You must first earn the privilege to wear a mask before you can take part in a ceremony. The Bwami society supports the production of most masks, and each mask has its own meaning and use. The raffia fiber beard on this mask symbolizes old age.

Curator's pick

I chose this object for its classic beauty, and because it reflects the concept of social currency. In order to advance through the ranks of Asante society, you must be a good person, do good deeds, and contribute to the community. In return for fine citizenship, the Bwami gives its members social privileges.
