Bwami members use masks like this one during instruction ceremonies, where initiates advance to higher ranks. You must first earn the privilege to wear a mask before you can take part in a ceremony. The Bwami society supports the production of most masks, and each mask has its own meaning and use. The raffia fiber beard on this mask symbolizes old age.
