![]() Smoky shrew Sorex fumeus Z93:__:__ Collected 24 September 1993, Cook Co., Minnesota This species has been found spreading southward in increasing numbers, after apparently originating in adjacent Canada (Ontario) and the northeastern United States. This spread is likely in response to changes in forest types resulting from the logging industry and its associated history. This movement does not agree with the expectations of global warming. Curator's pickI was involved in discovering the first of this species to be found in Minnesota where earlier field investigations by others failed to detect it. It is another example of Science Museum staff adding to the scientific knowledge of our world.
