Green tiger beetle

Green Tiger beetle

Cicendella patruela

Wadena Co., Minnesota

26 May 1959

The species has been listed as of special concern by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Only three breeding colonies of it are known in Minnesota and the colony from the family farm alluded to below still persists. Observations to profile its life history are undertaken when possible. This Tiger beetle is found on sparsely vegetated sunlit patches of sand under jack pine forest and woodlands.

Curator’s pick

I found this colorful specimen during my high school years on my family farm in north central Minnesota. Although few people give attention to insects other than more showy and conspicuous ones, I was quick to notice this attractive one early on. Small things such as it can be of scientific interest equal to larger ones!
